LIMA, Peru -- The unusually intact fossilized skull of a giant, toothed sea bird that died millions of years ago was found on Peru's arid southern coast, researchers said Friday.

The fossil is the best-preserved cranium ever found of a pelagornithid, a family of large seabirds believed to have gone extinct some three million years ago, said Rodolfo Salas, head of vertebrate paleontology at Peru's National History Museum.

Canada takes back deported gangster

Barry Artiste Op/Ed
Yep, the War on Gangs, Gangs 1, Government "Zippidity Squat", the Conservative Governments excuse that they were forced because of a previous Liberal Governments Promise, doesn't wash, Public Safety is a Concern, not previous Government Stupidity!

TORONTO -- Canadian officials acknowledged on Friday that they helped bring a "dangerous" gang member to Toronto from South Asia this week, two days before the government unveiled its new anti-gang strategy.

Panchalingam Nagalingam, who was deported in 2005 because of his involvement in a violent Toronto street gang, arrived back on Tuesday morning, and Canadian officials say they facilitated and paid for his return. The circumstances have one official lamenting that the government is "in the business of putting gangs and gangsters out of business, not in bringing them back to Canada."

Viagra-fuelled orgy ends in death

Barry Artiste Op/Ed

To take a page from a Barbara Walters Interview "If you were a tree, what kind of "Woodie" would you have?

A Russian man collapsed and died after a 12-hour orgy.

Sergey Tuganov made a $4,300 bet with two women that he could last a 12 hour sex marathon with them both.

The mechanic swallowed dozens of Viagra pills in the course of the session to ensure he would win. However, minutes after the 12 hours were up and he was declared the victor, the 28-year-old had a heart attack, collapsed and died.

One of the women, who only gave her name as Alina, told Moscow police: “We called emergency services but it was too late, there was nothing they could do.”

Medics said he most likely died from the quantity of viagra he had ingested.

Gangs Officially taken Control of the City of Abbotsford, BC

Barry Artiste Op/Ed

Gangs have officially taken over the City of Abbotsford, British Columbia when an area school now is forced to practice Lockdowns because a known Gangster lives in their Midst.  I say this again "Have we lost a War"? It seems so when a city is held hostage by criminals. I say time to take out the trash, cause when a Criminals Rights Trumps an entire City's rights, we as a society have gone to "Hell in a Handbasket"!

Perhaps a page from the Old West History should be taken, complete with Torches and Pitchfork in running undersirables out of town and hiring some Hangin Judges!

ABBOTSFORD - A parent of a Prince Charles Elementary student is furious that he wasn't informed about the extra security measures at the school, due to the facility's proximity to the Bacon brothers' family residence.

The parent, who did not want to be named, said he became aware of the measures after he noticed Abbotsford Police patrol vehicles regularly in the area. The Bacon brothers allegedly have ties to organized crime.

He then discovered that school administrators hold "lockdown practice" at the school with the students.

Obama's Requests $130 Billion Dollar War Chest: Iraq/Afghanistan

Barry Artiste Op/Ed

H-m-m-m something tells me if Bush were still President there would be flag burning Left Wing Protests in the streets and yelling for one's head, but since it is Newly minted President Obama, these protests seem eeriely silent.

How hypocritical, when it seems "Same Shit-Different Diaper" when the task of Politics is at hand, Yet the Lefties continue the "Obama Love Fest"!

Bush must be sitting in his ranch, cuppa hot cocoa in hand, smiling smugly!

WASHINGTON -- U.S. President Barack Obama proposed war spending yesterday that nears $11 billion a month for the next year and a half despite the planned drawdown of U.S. forces in Iraq.

The Obama administration wants to spend about $75 billion on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan through next fall, costs that were largely set by the previous Bush administration. On top of that the budget proposal released yesterday asks Congress for $130 billion for next year.

It's not clear yet whether Obama's promise to bring combat troops home from Iraq will carry a cost savings in the near term. The United States has been spending some $11 billion to $12 billion per month fighting two wars.

"The president is working with his military commanders to increase the number of troops in Afghanistan while responsibly removing combat forces from Iraq," the White House budget summary said.

The Green Lantern: Greener Pastures
Your final resting place doesn’t have to involve an ecological impact
Nina Shen Rastogi, Slate.com Published: Thursday, February 26, 2009

Q. I try to be as eco-conscious as possible when it comes to managing my household waste. But lately I've been worrying about what to do when I become waste. What's the greenest thing I can do with my remains when I shuffle off this mortal coil?

A The Green Lantern applauds you for thinking ahead. End-of-life decisions are always fraught and emotional; researching your options now - and spelling them out clearly - helps ensure that your loved ones abide by your wishes when you're out of the picture.

Foreign workers in Alta. face uncertain fate

Barry Artiste Op/Ed

Though I have always voiced on Now Public "Immediately stopping Immigration to Canada" during our worst economic times since the Dirty Thirties, those workers who immigrated here on good faith, law abiding, worked and contributed to Canada and now face employment uncertaintly because of the Global Economy should not be discarded and deported. They should be allowed to stay. Yet our Government for some reason is looking at bringing 500,000 immigrants to Canada from other lands!. Hello! what about the Friggin Immigrants we have here? What about them? You want them to Leave? Give your Head a Shake! They are already Here!

What happens after when the economy gets back on track? Good luck trying to get these Immigrants to come back here, once bitten, twice shy. These Workers have Canadian Skills now, you don't throw that away!

My feelings I adhere to, are from an 3,000 year old adage, we should all live by "When in Rome...........you are Roman if you contribute to the Wealth and Health of Rome!"  I put it this way, anyone living, working and contributing as law abiding citizens are Canadian! Period! Citizenship is only a paper document, these people are not! They are not disposable!

If they are to be deported, I say pay em off and pay em off good, regardless of their two year contract, cause we all know if the economy were gangbusters, they would have had their contracts renewed!  I say if Canada wont let them stay, then pay em two years salary Tax Free and send em on their way, with our apologies and appreciation for their contributions.

B ut then that is my opinion!

EDMONTON — The number of temporary foreign workers in Alberta doubled during the last two years of the boom to reach 57,843 — more than the population of Grande Prairie, Alta.

The new figures from Citizenship and Immigration show Alberta now has almost the same number of foreign workers as British Columbia, with 58,456 as of December 2008.

But as Canadian jobless figures rise, the fate of these workers in Alberta — mostly on two-year contracts in jobs ranging from engineers to welders and coffee-shop servers — is in question.

Even though Alberta shed 16,000 jobs in December and 5,700 in January, small businesses must continue to bring unskilled labour from overseas to staff hotels and restaurants because Canadians won’t take those jobs, says Danielle Smith, Alberta director of the Canadian Federation of Independent Business.

Hence why W.C. Fields never Drank Water, cause Fish F**^ in it!

BANGKOK, Thailand - The fossilized remains of two pregnant fish indicate sex as we know it - fertilization of eggs inside a female - took place as much as 30 million years earlier than previously thought, researchers said Thursday.

Scientists from Australia and Britain studying 380-million-year-old fossils of the armoured placoderm fish, or Incisoscutum richiei, said they were initially confused when they realized the two fish were carrying embryos. They originally thought the fish laid their eggs before fertilization.

The study found that low to moderate drinking was linked to an increase in cancer risk and may account for nearly 13 per cent of the cancers of the breast, liver, rectum, and upper digestive tract combined.

The findings are in the online issue of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.

The researchers examined the effect of alcohol consumption on women's cancer risk using the Million Women Study, which included almost 1.3 million middle-aged women in the United Kingdom.

Those women in the study who drank consumed, on average, one drink per day - which the study authors considered typical in most high-income countries such as the U.K. and Canada.

They found the risk of any type of cancer increased with increasing alcohol consumption, as did the risk of some specific types of cancer, including breast cancer, liver cancer and rectal cancer. Women who also smoked had an increased risk of mouth and throat cancers.

'Death to Canada,' some Afghan protesters chant

Barry Artiste Op/Ed

This certainly does not bode well for Canada and Canadians, with many calling for a troop pullout after 2 children were killed, by what Afghani's say was by Canadian Troops.

Protesters accused Canadian and American soldiers of killing the two during raids overnight Tuesday on houses in Senjaray, a community on the outskirts of Kandahar city. It is in the Zhari district, a hotbed of Taliban activity west of the city.

About 500 protesters shut down the main highway out of Kandahar city about 7 a.m. local time with some chanting "death to Canada" and "death to foreigners" and calling on foreign troops to leave the country.

Canadian military officials have denied involvement in the raids by both their own soldiers and NATO's.

322,000 manufacturing jobs disappeared from Canada today

Barry Artiste Op/Ed

Though we are losing a hundred thousand jobs almost monthly, we should take heart that Jason Kenney, Federal Minister of Multiculturalism has just increased Immigration this month to 500,000 people to supplement the unemployed masses who will be relying on social services in cities who can ill afford to care for Canadians yet alone more people coming to our shores. But when the ethnic votes are needed to prop up a Minority Government, the More the Merrier~!

Roughly 322,000 manufacturing jobs have disappeared from Canada
Financial PostFebruary 21, 2009  showTab("text/html");  While the Canadian economy added 1.5 million people to employer payrolls during its peak years, roughly 322,000 manufacturing jobs -- or more than one in seven positions in the sector -- disappeared from the landscape, Statistics Canada reported yesterday. function resizeImage() { var imgBox = document.getElementById('imageBox'); var photo = document.getElementById('storyphoto'); if (imgBox != null && photo != null) { if(photo.width >= 460) { imgBox.className = 'imagesize460'; } else { if(photo.width >= 300) { imgBox.className = 'imagesize310'; } else { imgBox.className = 'imageboxpadding'; } imgBox.style.width = photo.width + 'px'; } } } function getStoryFontSize() { var storyfontsize = getCookie('storyfontsize'); var storyfontimage = getCookie('storyfontimage'); // use cookied value, if present if (storyfontsize != null) { setClass('story_content',storyfontsize); if (storyfontimage != null) { setClass('fontsizecontainer',storyfontimage); } } else // default it to para14 if no cookie { setClass('story_content','para14'); setClass('fontsizecontainer','size02'); } } function setStoryFontSize(storyfontsize,storyfontimage) { setClass('story_content',storyfontsize); setClass('fontsizecontainer',storyfontimage); setCookie('storyfontsize', storyfontsize, '365', '/', '', ''); setCookie('storyfontimage', storyfontimage, '365', '/', '', ''); } function setCookie( name, value, expires, path, domain, secure ) { // set time var today = new Date(); today.setTime( today.getTime() ); if ( expires ) { expires = expires * 1000 * 60 * 60 * 24; //days } var expires_date = new Date( today.getTime() + (expires) ); document.cookie = name + "=" + escape( value ) + ( ( expires ) ? For the period between Jan. 1, 2004, to Dec. 31, 2008 -- which the Crown agency examined -- the share of manufacturing jobs in the economy dropped from 14.4 per cent to 11.5 per cent, or the loss of 322,000 positions.

Social housing at Olympic Village to cost $595,000 per unit

Barry Artiste Op/Ed

I have written more than a few stories on this Beached Whale of a Project. Funny how Math works when you are a politician, they say these shoebox condos are $600,000 per unit for each homeless person, when the real cost is 2 million dollars per unit. Then when you take into consideration the surrounding land in which his homeless uptopia is being built around that is another 252 million.  OOHH and the maintenance contractor to maintain the buildings will run close to 200 millions dollars. It may be a Leeds Gold Building, once built, but once the Homeless and Druggies move in, the Leeds Status will soon be removed as they put their own personal stamp on these units, such a railroad spikes to hold up towels, shopping carts in their units, and graffitti etc.

So you see when a 1 billion dollar price tag is stated, these units true cost is close to 4 million dollars for 600 square foot luxury walk in closet with a view.

But dont tell politicians that, cause truth hurts, and for Vancouver taxpayers who will pay for all this for generations to come it will really, really hurt.  So take 252 units and divide it into a billion dollars and see if you come up with $600,000? Can't be done, unless your Math Wiz Mayor Gregor Robertson, maybe it is Municipal councillors Wacky Math skills which go us into this mess in the first place when they said a couple of years back the entire project would only cost a couple of hundred million.

Where’s bankruptcy court? I want to get in line.

Not because I’m actually going broke. I’m just thinking it might be a way to move closer to Vancouver’s downtown waterfront.

Yes, I’m musing about getting on the Olympic Athletes’ Village social housing list. It’s quite the deal.

A few days ago, I had a tour of the $1-billion Olympic village. Sadly, I’ll never afford the $6-million penthouses. But the City of Vancouver’s brain trust has managed to build us some of the slickest social housing on the planet.

As you may have heard, Vancouver’s taxpayers now face a $110-million bill for 252 units of “affordable housing.” That’s $77 million over budget — or about $436,000 a unit.

But it’s more, really. Add in the approximately $40 million in free city land and you can pretty much count on Olympic social housing costing $595,000 apiece, or about $540 a square foot. That’s at least double normal cost.

As you might expect, our Olympic social housing is something to behold. I viewed a south-facing, one-bedroom on the ground floor, with 12-foot ceilings and panoramic windows looking out onto a street 100 metres from the water.

uploaded by Barry Artiste

Opinion
Barry Artiste, Now Public Contributor

You know, I was tempted to include my No Shit Sherlock Photo into this story, but decided against it, as it is far from humourous.

With Attorney General Wally Oppal, our Head Judge announcing this week on February 16, 2009 that his department will be laying off 100 staffers in the prosecutors office speaks volumes on the British Columbia's when they spout useless rhetoric in their obvious flaccid response in fighting crime! What with seems like a gangland hit a week, certainly stinks in Wally Ministry! Time for some splain'in Lucy! Time to give Wally the Heave Ho as well, as many citizens are screaming mad with BCs Revolving Door Justice.

British Columbia's new Title as a World Crime Superpower is nothing to be proud of and certainly speaks volumes of our Government Leadership and Ineffective Justice System in this province who have allowed the criminal enterprise to propagate, just in time for the 2010 Olympics, and we wonder why security for the Olympics once estimated a scant year ago at a 140 million is now close to a Billion dollars of taxpayers money!

Many on Now Public had read my countless articles on this issue of an ineffective Justice Systems catch and release programs and a government who throws money to police to stop it.  Police may catch the criminals, but it is the incompetent BC Courts, Judges and Justice system which releases the Criminals back onto the streets faster than the Police can arrest them again, and again and again.

Is it any wonder frustrated Police Officers lose it, and beat the crap out of repeat criminals, when the Officers know their efforts are for nothing.  Officers are meant to protect us, but cannot if the Justice system releases criminals back into society to do us harm.

One aspect of an ineffective Justice System will be citizens taking Vigilante Justice into their own hands, resulting in more lawlessness. Presnetly we are known in Law Enforcement Circle North American wide as the "True Wild West of  Lawlessness".

Surrey BC, for instance is North America's Number #1 Car Theft Capital.

Surrey also has terrorist elements who have threatened the Mayor over her disapproval over their Terrorist Bent.

Only in British Columbia has this resulted in No Action against this well known group deemed terrorist ties by our Federal Government. One wonders if this same Terrorist Organization were living in the USA and made similar life threats against any American Mayor or Bureaucrat, that the entire US military and Law Enforcement community would not immediately swoop down upon them, and make them disappear permanently.

Only British Columbia deserves the Distinction of  "Nancy British Columbia."

Miami, once the crime capital of the world, was a mecca of criminal cocaine activity, an activity which saw drug money building a city to unimaginable proportions as Criminal Organizations had no way to launder their drug money without getting the attention of a watchful US government, this pumped their Drug Money amounting to Billions of dollars into construction projects and new businesses at every street corner, while politicians knew the deal, looked the other way.

Anyone who lives in Vancouver and the Lower Mainland can certainly see the Miami similarities of money infusion into cities in the lower mainland, unlimited construction projects at every turn. People, especially those new to Canada with no appreciable amount of employment income living beyond their means in 1 million dollar homes, Does  this not strike anyone as unusual?

Of course it seems Realtors have no problem in accepting Cash offers, no questions asked.  I wonder of anyone else but criminals have that much walking around money?

Our Ports have dock workers ranging from Hell's Angels to other criminal elements, yet when the Government wanted to perform Security and Criminal Background checks on people employed in our Ports offloading cargo, the Union protested and the Government backed down.

I see it everyday in my profession and wonder if Politicians of every level are Blind, or just not caring about the Criminal activity in this province.

One video, one should rent is "Cocaine Cowboys", how Miami came to be because of the influx of  Drug money and  make a comparison and see how Vancouver is faring as Miami's equal.

Certainly when Politicians state that British Columbia, in particular "Vancouver is the Best place in the World to live".   They are certainly correct from a Criminal's Perspective!

And when 2010 Olympics hit this Province, it is only going to get worse People, cause after the Olympics those Criminal organizations who visit here, will look at our Non existent court and justice system, and will decide to make British Columbia their home base, it will be far worse than you can imagine!  Mark my words!

How B.C. became a world crime superpower16/05/2008 5:15:20 PM

By JASON KIRBY AND NANCY MACDONALD

Forget forestry or fishing. B.C.'s big, multi-billion-dollar growth industry is crime. And business is booming.By almost any measure it was a thriving enterprise, with subsidiaries in eight countries and a flourishing distribution business. Even more impressive, it was run out of Vancouver, a city that's seen many head offices disappear over the years. And with its strong sales, the venture would easily have been considered one of British Columbia's largest private companies. That is, if the operation at the heart of it all wasn't a criminal syndicate trading in marijuana, cocaine, heroin, guns and real estate.

In December, officers from the RCMP and Vancouver Police Department showed off the results of a 14-month investigation called Project E-Paragon. Working with police in the U.S. and Australia, officers seized $168 million worth of drugs, along with luxury homes, exotic vehicles, millions in cash and weapons. More than 100 people were arrested worldwide, including the alleged ringleader, 50-year-old Yong Long Ye of Vancouver. The allegations regarding the crime ring have not been proven in court, but police believe they've broken up an incredibly complex and profitable operation. And if Canadians are inclined to believe this was a one-off scheme, an aberration to the postcard-perfect image British Columbia projects to the world, think again. There are lots more, we don't have a shortage of targets, says RCMP Supt. Doug Kiloh, of the combined special forces enforcement unit in Vancouver.

Consider, for a moment, just a few figures that show the size and scope of the crime industry in B.C.:

• There are an estimated 20,000 marijuana grow ops in houses across the province, and many thousands more hidden in the mountains and valleys of the interior. It's conservatively estimated that marijuana is an industry with revenues of $5 billion to $7 billion a year.

• In the last few years, according to the Canadian Border Services Agency, more than $1 billion worth of cocaine has been seized at borders in the Pacific region. One media report last fall found the amount of cocaine recovered at B.C.'s borders more than tripled in the previous two years.

• The province is the main port of entry for chemicals used in the manufacture of drugs such as methamphetamine and ecstasy, while B.C.-based Asian gangs are the largest suppliers of ecstasy to Canada and the U.S.

• In the last year there have been roughly two dozen gangland slayings in the Vancouver region. The number of homicides in B.C.'s Lower Mainland in the first four months of this year was nearly three times that of Toronto. And when Maclean's recently looked at Canada's most dangerous cities using data from Statistics Canada, 11 of the top 20 were located in B.C. Meanwhile the number of gangs operating in the province has jumped from less than 10 a decade ago to 129.

Add it all up, and you can't help but see British Columbia for what it is - a key hub in the world of international organized crime. For all its natural beauty and its Birkenstock reputation, police now put Vancouver on par with New York and Los Angeles when they talk of cities in the grip of criminal syndicates. By some estimates, criminal activity amounts to roughly seven per cent of the province's total economy. Though hard and fast numbers about the size of organized crime are impossible to determine, it's safe to say that alongside construction and tourism, criminal activity is one of B.C.'s strongest growth industries. We can quibble about a billion dollars here or a billion dollars there, says Darryl Plecas, a criminology professor at the University College of the Fraser Valley. But the bottom line is there's no question this is a multi-billion [dollar] industry. And as Western Canada positions itself to be North America's most important commercial corridor to Asia, with the much-heralded Pacific Gateway initiative, criminal gangs are poised to expand their operations in a huge way. Crime is big business in B.C., and business, unfortunately, is booming.

Liberal leader tells Obama Canada concerned about Khadr

Barry Artiste Op/Ed

Obama wisely sidestepped the issue Liberal "One Trick Pony" Leader Ignatieff  brought up about Canada's Terrorist Omar Khadr!   To which Ignatieff replied, when the Liberals take over the country, they will drop on Bended Knee and serve Master Obama.  I am sure Obama was thinking, "If you ever Get Elected" I'll go out and Buy Lottery Tickets!

Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff said Thursday he raised the case of Canadian Omar Khadr in his meeting with U.S. President Barack Obama at Ottawa International Airport.

Ignatieff told CBC News that Obama was "glad to know" Canadian parties were concerned about Khadr, the only Westerner remaining in detention at the U.S. Naval base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

Obama said his administration is reviewing all the cases of the individuals who are still being held at Guantanamo.

Gang violence will take years to conquer, says president of polic

Barry Artiste Op/Ed

Though the President of Chiefs of Police is earnest in his plan to eradicate Gangs, one thing clearly missing in this plan by municipal mayors is a call to the Federal Government to implement immediate deportation of any convicted Gang Members and their families (who know of their kids gang affiliation) from Canada.  Any Canadians convicted of gang crimes recieve no bail, no credit for time served and go to prison for so long, once they are released they will be using a walker.  That will be a deterrent when gangs learn their families as well face deportation as well, cause many family members know all too well what their kids are doing. For Canadian Gang Members, knowing they will never see the light of day outside prison and perform hard labour will be a deterrent.  My ideal would be Military Prisons like Gitmo, as compared to the luxury of our mainstream prisons.

By Jonathan Fowlie and Kim Bolan, Vancouver Sun

The Lower Mainland is “years away” from solving the problem of gang violence, a senior police officer said Thursday. But regional mayors drew up a wish list of things they’d like the federal and provincial governments to do sooner than later. “I feel like we’re going to make some headway in the next while, but to be honest, we’ve got a long way to go,” said Abbotsford Police Chief Bob Rich, who is also president of the British Columbia Association of Municipal Chiefs of Police.

Rich said police haven’t had the resources needed to tackle the gang problem. “I honestly don’t think the level of response has been appropriate to the size of the problem,” he said, adding that additional resources announced last week by Premier Gordon Campbell would help.

Metro Vancouver mayors, hosted by Surrey’s Dianne Watts, drew up an 11-point action plan. Most of the points are beyond municipal control and will have to be addressed by the federal and provincial governments.

Appeal court overturns drug, gun convictions over police mistakes

Barry Artiste Op/Ed

Two time convicted Drug Supplier gets his conviction overturned over semantics by a Moronic Judge who despite this guy was convicted of the exact same offence finds this Drug Supplier Innocent, because Police mistakenly tresspassed.  Certainly shows what is wrong with our Crime and Punishment Laws when a minute discrepancy throws out evidence, regardless of the mountain of evidence against this guy! One wonder if Immigration Canada can pay a visit on his past record and show him the errors of his ways as they send him packing back to Asia!

VANCOUVER - A man convicted of cultivating marijuana and possessing a .357 revolver and stun gun has had his convictions overturned on appeal.

Three judges of the B.C. Court of Appeal allowed the appeal of Michael Donald Ling, finding police made serious mistakes while executing a search warrant and gathering evidence.

“In my view, in this case, to admit the evidence gathered pursuant to this warrant would bring the administration of justice into disrepute in the minds of right-thinking citizens. I would exclude the evidence and in the circumstances enter an acquittal on the counts before the court,” Justice Robert Bauman ruled in a judgment released Thursday, with Justices Ian Donald and Carol Huddart in agreement.

Ling, 48, who lived at Christina Lake, was convicted in Grand Forks Provincial Court of cultivating marijuana, possession for the purpose of trafficking, unlawfully possessing a .357 revolver, which is a restricted weapon, and possessing a prohibited weapon, a stun gun.

He was also convicted of improperly storing a 12-gauge shotgun and ammunition found at Ling’s residence.

Five arrested after dramatic morning rescue of kidnapped teenager

Same Shit, Different Diaper, in what our Flaccid Government Calls our fair City, but many Retort as one of the Bestest Places to get Murdered or Kidnapped in the World!

Vancouver police have arrested five kidnapping suspects after a dramatic morning rescue of a teenaged hostage.

The 18-year-old student from China was uninjured as strike force members pulled over a vehicle in which he was riding at about 7:30 a.m. Thursday in Burnaby.

Deputy chief Doug LePard said the young man was targeted when he was snatched from his West End residence Sunday. The kidnappers called the teen’s parents in China.

“During the investigation, we identified several residences in Burnaby we believed to be associated with the kidnapping and identified numerous suspects that were placed under surveillance,” LePard said. “Over the course of the next four days, officers worked 24 hours a day to identify a stronghold where the hostage was being held.

Police threw massive resources at solving the case, including wiretaps, surveillance and talking to officials in China.

U.S. media struggle through Obama visit

Certainly one reporter was correct in stating, This is the most exciting event in Canada's History of History, judging by the Hype over President Obama's Visit.

One nice aspect was Obama stating to our Governor General was that he loved Canada and was touched by Canadians reponse to his visit.  In addition Obama stated if things do not go so well in the United States during his term as President, Obama stated to our Governor General , he'd pack up the family wagon and move to Canada!  Obama also broke protocol and made a side trip to the Historic byward market to shake hands with the crowd, play tourist and buy some baked goods and souvenirs for his family.  I guess Ottawa's wintry weather made an impression on him, watching people skating on the Rideau Canal, touted to be the worlds longest skating rink at over a 50 miles long.

WASHINGTON — One CNN anchor had apparently never seen the Mounties before, and those who recognized one of Canada’s most iconic national symbols noted the absence of their horses.

Others seemed enthralled by how wintry Ottawa was, while some on-air personalities struggled mightily to pronounce “Michaelle Jean” and “charge d’affaires.”

France claims historic Great Lakes wreck

Barry Artiste Op/Ed

Maritime Law titled "Finders Keepers" is in effect, regardless what France states in their quest to recover a 400 year old ship which sank in US waters in the 17th century.

It is an amazing find after all these years, especially in the Great Lakes, many do not know that the Great Lakes can preserve sunken wooden ships almost to pristine condition as oxygen, cold, and lack of wood eating worms make it an ideal place to recover and document shipwrecks.

Certainly I and many look forward to a Documentary, in the National Geographic if it is ever made.

France claims historic Great Lakes wreck
By Randy Boswell, Canwest News ServiceFebruary 17, 2009

The French government has formally moved to lay claim to one of Canadian history's most important shipwrecks — if, as a U.S. relic hunter believes, the 330-year-old Griffon has been discovered at the bottom of Lake Michigan.

The Griffon, built in 1679 near today's Niagara Falls, Ont., by French explorer Rene-Robert de La Salle, became the first sailing ship on the Great Lakes but was lost in a storm that year on its maiden voyage.

In 2004, U.S. wreck diver Steve Libert discovered remnants of what he suspects is a 17th-century shipwreck at the north end of Green Bay, near the boundary waters of Michigan and Wisconsin.

A BC teen with a gun to his head by 2 assailants who mistook the home for someone else, had the tables turned on them, after the criminal shot the teens brother, the frightened teen wrestled the gun away from one of the Home invaders and shot him dead, as the other criminal escaped.

Tragic as it is that this Teen had to take a life, it shows when faced with death, adrenaline and survival takes over.

Bottom line the Teen is a Hero, saving his Brothers life, by snuffing out a criminal otherwise who would serve little time in jail or get out on bail and saving BC Taxpayers the grief of a long and useless trial.

UNITED NATIONS -- Suspected kidnappers of two Canadian diplomats on a United Nations mission to Niger have set a "prisoner exchange" as a condition for their release, Canwest News Service has learned.

This emerges as al-Qaeda's wing in North Africa Tuesday claimed responsibility for holding Robert Fowler and his Foreign Affairs aide Louis Guay -- as well as four Western tourists kidnapped in Niger's neighbour Mali, near the border between the two countries.

The "prisoner exchange" demand has complicated efforts to free the Canadians, who disappeared Dec. 14 along with their locally hired driver, Soumana Mounkaila.

Five issues Harper,Obama likely tackle: Khadr Ain't one of them!

Barry Artiste Op/Ed

The 5 issues likely to be discussed are nowhere near the Issues "Special Interests Groups" (SIGs) want discussed.

One can be sure SIGs will be pissed their agenda's are not discussed, including Khadr's return to Canada from Gitmo!

As excitement builds for Barack Obama's first state visit to Canada on Thursday, so does the pressure on its frantic schedule.

At home, Mr. Obama is being pushed to address the environmental fallout from Alberta's oil sands or the injustices of our softwood lumber exports. Stephen Harper, on the other hand, faces calls to bring up the status of 22-year-old accused terrorist Omar Khadr or U.S. designs on oil deposits in the Arctic.

But a clenched-fist approach will not benefit Canada, diplomats say, especially when a profound economic crisis trumps all other issues.

British Columbians biggest users of erectile dysfunction medication

By Pamela Fayerman, Vancouver Sun February 17, 2009

B.C. residents spend 25 per cent less per capita on medicine than the rest of Canada — except when it comes to prescription drugs for erectile dysfunction. We spend the most on those. A new University of B.C. report on prescription-drug spending does not explain whether the greater use of drugs such as Viagra, Cialis and Levitra is due to a higher proportion of men in B.C. with impotence.

Experts interviewed Tuesday said they thought it might have to do with cultural factors.

For example, such drugs are used “recreationally” in the homosexual community. “We know they are used in the gay community as performance-enhancing drugs, so that’s a theory to explain the higher spending here, but I have no data to back that up,” said Alan Cassels, a drug policy researcher at the University of Victoria.

uploaded by Gauravonomics

Should citizen-journalists be paid?  As sites like NowPublic and other spread their sea legs into the new world of web 2.0, questions begin to arrise on paying writers and photographers for content or maintain a since of objectivity to report real news and not tabloid type articles that drive large amounts of traffic to sites.  Here is an artcikle from the Daily Telegraph that asks some of the important questions being raised in Crowd Powered media and other Citizen journalism sites.  Canadians are website are especially stressed as the net nuetrality police may stifle growth by causing a US fairness doctine type program on content.

Is paying our photographers and reporters against the spirit of citizen-journalism? It's something that we are occasionally challenged on, but we think is emphatically not the case.

Given the success of Wikis, Creative Commons and open-source, it is tempting to see the future of journalism in free-to-edit, unpaid websites. These sites, such as NowPublic, are popular but have been criticized for being opinion-driven and derivative. You can judge for yourself the standard of articles on such sites, but what is undeniable is that only a small minority of stories are based on first-hand new information. Original journalism is in short supply.

In recent years, virtually all major news organizations have incorporated some user-generated content into their publications, programmes and websites. CNN has i-Report, the BBC asks users to Have Your Say, and Reuters has teamed up with Yahoo to feed it citizen-produced content. However, these projects are dependent on photographers giving away their content for free, whether in charity or ignorance. Their business model is based on citizens’ willingness to surrender their copyright.

Quebec separatist army claims victory

Barry Artiste Op/Ed

Considering the terrible state of the Economy, a few Crotch Monkeys, threw a Wrench into a Re-enactment of the Battle of the Plains of Abraham, a historic battle which helped in part form the United States and Canada, as well as make Quebec what some say is a "Country within a Country. Being from Quebec City myself and being a Quebecer, a victory may have been won by these Idiots, but at the Expense and a Huge Loss to the People of Quebec in terms of Quebec Pride and Fortitude against all Odds in the Battle, not to mention Tourist Dollars and showcasing to the World that Nonsensical Babblings from a small group of Separatistes armed with an Internet Petition did what the British could no do! Stop History in the Making!

The Battle of the Plains of Abraham was not just French against the British, but the Quebecers who fought against the British were Irish, Scottish, English, French, German, First Nations, etc, and yes hundreds of Colonial Americans, including Benedict Arnold who were tired of English Oppression.

Granted, we lost the Battle, but won the War, but the bigger picture many fail to realise, is today we are here and British Army is not.

So in reality, who really won the Battle of the Plains of Abraham?  We did! Making our two countries one of the most desirable places to live while other countries look on with envy.

As for the Separatistes, their Tunnel Vision certainly shows how moronic they really are!

A ragtag army of Quebec separatists, armed only with Internet petitions and menacing e-mails, appears to have triumphed where the French army failed 250 years ago, preventing another British victory on the Plains of Abraham.

Following weeks of mounting controversy that last week reached Parliament, the National Battlefields Commission is to announce today a revised plan to commemorate the anniversary of the historic 1759 battle.

By THE CANADIAN PRESS TORONTO --

Two former residents of Montreal detained in Guantanamo Bay for alleged terrorist links lost their bid yesterday to gain access to Canadian intelligence documents because the men don't have a strong connection to Canada.

In turning down their request for the material, a Federal Court judge ruled the Charter of Rights and Freedoms doesn't apply to Ahcene Zemiri and Mohamedou Slahi.

"The charter, an integral part of Canada's supreme law, is a Canadian instrument enacted to enshrine and protect the fundamental rights of Canadians and those finding themselves within Canada's territory," Judge Edmond Blanchard wrote in his decision. "Its extraterritorial reach is exceptional and limited."

Zemiri and Slahi are fighting civil actions in the U.S. to be released from Guantanamo Bay, where they have been held since 2002.

Boy, Who didn't see that one coming?

Funds lost over hatred. Minister called 'professional whore'

By ELIZABETH THOMPSON, NATIONAL BUREAU

Immigration Minister Jason Kenney is poised to slash federal funding to Canada's largest Arabic group after its president called him a "professional whore" for supporting Israel.

In an exclusive interview with Sun Media from London, England, where he is to speak today at an international conference on anti-Semitism, Kenney said groups are free within legal bounds to say what they like. But groups whose leaders say intolerant or hateful things shouldn't get taxpayer funding.

"We should not be rewarding those who express views that are contrary to Canada's best liberal values of tolerance and mutual respect."

One of those groups, said Kenney, is the Canadian Arab Federation whose president Khaled Mouammar called him a "professional whore" after Kenney criticized the presence of Hezbollah and Hamas flags at anti-Israel rallies in Toronto.

Woman gunned down in Surrey shooting, child escapes death!

Photos

No footage found.

Barry Artiste Op/Ed

News of a woman gunned down with her 4 year old boy have many safely assume the dead woman to be the mother.  Outrage among citizens call for action against what many say is rhetoric by an inactive justice system.  Many are calling for the Attorney General Wally Oppals Resignation and a revamp of our lacklustre justice system.

One should be reminded though, tragic as it is, the current state of affairs has been going on for close to a decade,  A decade of voters who time and time again votes for testicular deficient politicians, whose only goal it seems is collecting a hefty paycheque for little work. A society where complacency seems to be the norm, until it personally affects those directly.

This society has been given to uprising and protests when governments talk of getting tough on crime, resulting in politicians listening to the masses, despite their convictions and better judgement.

If citizens of BC want change, then you have to put your signature where your mouth is, as it seems lives speak louder than your vocal protests which go unheard.

There will be an election in the spring, so canvass your  political candidate to publicly state serious time for serious crimes, and no bartering for jail sentences. Failure to do so will have us revisit this scenario for the next decade to come.

The victim was caught in a hail of bullets in the 96th Street and 148th area of Surrey, which left the 4-year-old boy apparently traumatized, but otherwise unharmed.

Just after 11:00 a.m. Monday, CTV Chopper 9 captured video of a white Cadillac sedan covered in a yellow tarpaulin, and parked on the sidewalk.

Police have confirmed the victim is a woman and a four-year-old boy was sitting in the back of the car at the time of the shooting.

RCMP Cpl. Dale Carr of the Integrated Homicide Team (IHIT) said he was "amazed" that the boy was unharmed. "He seems to be doing just fine," he said.

He really is The TERMINATOR!  Schwarzengger to send out 20,000 pink slips. California as well as 3 other states are having severe revenue problems that include holding back tax refunds and delaying government paychecks.

In addition to shutting down public-works projects, Schwarzenegger administration moves toward massive state layoffs as legislators continue to seek the one GOP vote needed to pass a budget. By Michael Rothfeld and Jordan Rau
4:49 PM PST, February 16, 2009 Reporting from Sacramento -- In an apparent effort to increase pressure on lawmakers negotiating an end to California's fiscal crisis, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is preparing to send pink slips to 20,000 state workers.

The governor had delayed sending the layoff notices since Friday, hoping lawmakers would soon approve a package to close a nearly $41-billion budget gap. But despite intense negotiations since Saturday, Schwarzenegger and the Senate Democratic majority have been unable to secure a third Republican vote for a plan that includes more than $14 billion in new taxes.

Zakaria: The Canadian Solution

Barry Artiste Op/EdAgree or not, the man has a point, a point Obamarama could well be advised to follow.  America has always been a "Can Do" Society, While Canada has always been a "Wait and See" Society, much to our detriment in the past.

Now in the Global Economic Meltdown the World over, one can say Canada Trumps for once on the World Economic Stage with it's "Wait and See" philosophy!

The legendary editor of The New Republic, Michael Kinsley, once held a "Boring Headline Contest" and decided that the winner was "Worthwhile Canadian Initiative." Twenty-two years later, the magazine was rescued from its economic troubles by a Canadian media company, which should have taught us Americans to be a bit more humble. Now there is even more striking evidence of Canada's virtues. Guess which country, alone in the industrialized world, has not faced a single bank failure, calls for bailouts or government intervention in the financial or mortgage sectors. Yup, it's Canada. In 2008, the World Economic Forum ranked Canada's banking system the healthiest in the world. America's ranked 40th, Britain's 44th.

Orchard Park police are investigating a particularly gruesome killing, the beheading of a woman, after her husband — an influential member of the local Muslim community — reported her death to police Thursday.

Police identified the victim as Aasiya Z. Hassan, 37. Detectives have charged her husband, Muzzammil Hassan, 44, with second-degree murder.

"He came to the police station at 6:20 p.m. [Thursday] and told us that she was dead," Orchard Park Police Chief Andrew Benz said late this morning.

Muzzammil Hassan told police that his wife was at his business, Bridges TV, on Thorn Avenue in the village. Officers went to that location and discovered her body.

Muzzammil Hassan is the founder and chief executive officer of Bridges TV, which he launched in 2004, amid hopes that it would help portray Muslims in a more positive light.

Two Time Convicted Repeat rapist jailed 13 years

Barry Artiste Op/Ed

The problem I have with this story is Two Time Convicted Rapist! This means it is not his first or 2nd offence, and we wonder why Canadians have lost virtually all confidence in our Courts system.  Nancy Canada at its Finest.

Would any Jury convict the victim or victims family or friends for taking the law in their own hands, when the courts fail to do what is right?

CALGARY -- The brutal and degrading rape of a city woman at the hands of a twice-convicted sex offender has landed him a 13-year prison term.

Justice Marsha Erb yesterday said a lengthy punishment was needed for James Dee Lemmon, in part to keep him behind bars and away from the public.

As a result, Erb also ordered Lemmon must serve at least half his sentence before the National Parole Board can consider him for release.

Crown calls for 'ultimate penalty' for Canada's 1st Terrorist!

Barry Artiste Op/Ed

Crown appeals to the Judge for a harsher prison  sentence for Canada's 1st High Profile Terrorist may fall on the deaf ears. You see, Momin Khawaja was a high profile Canadian Government Employee who used his Canadian Government Identification and High Level Security clearance to mastermind his Terrorist Bent, but using his Government Security Clearance, he went under both countries Terrorist Radar when flying to Britian for his Al Qaeda meetings, this "false sense of security" by  Customs and Immigration Officers resulted in one of Englands worst Terrorist Bus Bombing, gets a relatively light prison sentence compared to the death and carnage he caused.  It looks he may be out in 10 years and back into Canadian Society.

Accusations from Islamic Groups against the Government of Picking on an Innocent Muslim and a few Political types looking for that Groovy Ethnic Vote were also thrown into the mix. Virtually all professed his innocence as a Government Witchhunt.

As the trial progressed and video and email evidence was presented, supporters of Momin Khawaja started to Gag on their Tofu Lattes and began to Soil their Depends as evidence portraying this convicted Terrorist as Hell on Earth, looking to kill as many as possible for Jihad.  Certainly justice for a government reviled by his Moronic Supporters, in if given a chance Momin would not think twice of slitting all their throats for his terrorist cause!

I have been covering his trial and arrest since day one and have provided links at the end of this story for those who wish to read the entire story of Canada's 1st Terrorist.

Says Khawaja was 'trigger man and linchpin' for U.K. terror cell
By DONNA CASEY, SUN MEDIA

Convicted terrorist Momin Khawaja should serve two life terms, plus a minimum of 44 additional years in prison, a Crown prosecutor told a judge yesterday.

In a blistering rebuttal to defence arguments presented last week, federal prosecutor David McKercher said Khawaja "has shown no remorse and has chose a murderous way of life." "It's possible that his offered view may be changed, but at present, he remains a grave and palpable threat to society,

" McKercher told Judge Douglas Rutherford during Khawaja's sentencing hearing.

The 29-year-old Orleans man was convicted in October of seven terrorism offences connected to financing, facilitating and participating in a U.K.-based terror cell.

McKercher called on Rutherford to hand two life sentences and between 44 and 58 additional years for five other offences.

Study further unscrambles egg-cholesterol myth
New research has taken another crack at the myths surrounding eggs. The study found that not only will eggs not raise cholesterol levels, eating two a day while on a calorie-restricted diet could actually help you lose weight, thereby lowering cholesterol.

13/02/2009 1:53:16 AM
CTV.ca News Staff

A research team from the University of Surrey led by professor of nutritional metabolism Bruce Griffin fed two eggs per day to overweight but otherwise healthy volunteers for 12 weeks while they followed a reduced-calorie diet prescribed by the British Heart Foundation. A second group followed the BHF diet also but cut out eggs altogether.

Both groups lost between 3 to 4 kg (7- 9 lbs) and saw a fall in the average level of blood cholesterol, the research, to be published in the European Journal of Nutrition, found.

When blood cholesterol was measured at both six weeks and 12 weeks, both groups showed either no change or a reduction, particularly in their LDL (bad) cholesterol levels. That was despite the fact that the egg group had increased their dietary cholesterol intake to around four times that of the non-egg group.

Omar Khadr's return in country's best interest, say opposition MP

Barry Artiste Op/Ed Opposition Political opportunists grandstanding for the Media are demanding our Prime Minister Stephen Harper tell Obama in no uncertain terms to release Accused Terrorist Omar Khadr to Canada, because in their Word (Drivel) it is in Canada's Interest that Khadr come back to Canada for Rehabilitation and a most likely a Heros Welcome by Anti American advoctates! I for one would like to know the reasoning in their "Statement of Idiocy" how bringing Taliban Khadr back to Canada will serve in our Best Interests?????? Are these three Stooges on Crack?? Again I bring up the subject of Politicians looking for that almighty ethnic vote, as there are Canadians serving prision time in other countries who profess innocence, yet these Three Wonks of Stupidity remain Silent for their cause, as a woman spent 2 years rotting in a Mexican Jail and it was Prime Minister Harpers Government who finally got her home, not these three Drivel Donkeys, why? Well she was Canadian and of no particular ethinicity, hence not a Vote Getter for these Three Insipid Rump Rangers! It seems if you are Ethnic, and the potential Votes are plentiful, then you can count on these three Lefty Morons to have your back! http://www.cbc.ca/canada/story/2009/02/11/khadr-appeal.html Omar Khadr's return in country's best interest, say opposition MPs PMO dismisses plea as 'PR campaign' With Washington poised to shut down the Guantanamo Bay military prison, it's in Canada's best interest to bring terrorism suspect Omar Khadr back home to monitor his situation, a trio of opposition MPs said Wednesday. The opposition call came shortly before one of Khadr's lawyers and a group of Muslim leaders outlined a proposed reintegration plan for Khadr if he is returned to Canada. Despite the plea, a spokesman for Prime Minister Stephen Harper reaffirmed there will be no change in policy regarding Khadr unless the U.S. changes its position and dismissed the plan as a "PR stunt and nothing more."

Al-Jazeera English to Canada !!

Barry Artiste Op/Ed/Satire Al-Jazeera, much like CNN almost two decades ago covering the US-Iraq war will broadcast news, normally not available on mainstream stations in Canada. What would the CRTC think of all this? Well one can be certain CBC and other Canadian News Media will not be too fond of another slice of the "News Media Pie" being "Eaten" by this "News Interloper of Beheadings and Grit" avoided by mainstream News. I bet the CRTC will want Al-Jazeera to clean up it's News, and provide some Canadian Content as well, such as show "Wholesome Folksy Crotch Grabbingly MultiCulutural Diversity Drivel Shows such as: "Little Mosque on the Prairie" Rita McNeil's "All you can Eat" Christmas Specials Full Contact Major League Curling, with swords instead of brooms. "Where are them 70 Virgins Hiding" sort of like a 3's Company remake! "Burqa, Burqa, Dirka, Dirka, Where's My Burqa" sort of like "Sex in the City", except NO Sex, and a Bombed out City. "Welcome Back Khadr" Course some new non Canadian International shows may make it in Canada, such as: Paris is Burning, "Car Fire Riot Olympic Championships" "War what is it Good For"  Absolutely Everything! Of course we may be entertained by such Kissy Face Culture Nature shows such: "Israel and Iran" the Original Odd Couple! Oh the Hilarity of it all, I can just picture, Neat Freak Momar, hides 4 pounds of C-4 inside his roomate Mort's Pillowcase! While roomate Mort mixes Ham innards in Momars Falafel. Not to be outdone, special Guest Appearances by Lefty Jack Layton and BC Liberal (Anything for a vote) Premier Gordo Campbell competing for one upmanship of Polticial Correctness in who can outdo each other in "Multicultural Diversity Jeaporady" Here is an excerpt how I see it! Lefty Layton: "I'll take a Vowel for 6 Drachmas" the word is............ Right as Rain Gordo: " I would just like to say some of my best friends are non white"! Lefty Layton: Hey! No fair, thats what I was about to say! In ending, this will be Must See TV! http://www.vancouversun.com/Entertainment/Jazeera+English+could+broadcasting+Canada+later+this+year/1275001/story.html Photo Inset: Tony Burman is the Canadian managing director of Al-Jazeera English. Photograph by: Ward Perrin, Vancouver Sun Al-Jazeera English could be broadcasting in Canada later this year By Doug Ward, Vancouver SunFebruary 10, 2009 The only international television network broadcasting graphic images of death and destruction during the recent Gaza hostilities was a network unavailable on all but a few North American TV screens: Al-Jazeera. Israel’s decision to prohibit foreign journalists from entering the Gaza Strip left the field open to Al-Jazeera, and just might have given the Qatari-funded network’s English-language news service the credibility it needs to break into the 600-channel universe found in most Canadian and American homes. This is the hope of Tony Burman, the Canadian managing director of Al-Jazeera English, who said Tuesday his network could be broadcasting in Canada later this year.

30 mummies found in newly discovered tomb in Egypt

Barry Artiste Op/Ed

One wonders if some were forced alive when entombed as servants.

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
CAIRO - Egyptian archaeologists say they have discovered 30 mummies inside a 4,600-year-old tomb, in the latest round of excavations at the vast necropolis of Saqqara 20 kilometres south of Cairo.

Egypt's chief archeologist, Zahi Hawas, says the new tomb was found Sunday at the bottom of an 11 metre deep well. Eight of the mummies were in sarcophagi and the rest had been placed in niches in the wall.

Hawas has described the new site as a "storeroom for mummies."

Canadian expats risk becoming 'second-class' citizens: study

Barry Artiste Op/Ed

Mr. Kenny Zhang, must think we are Niave Canadians who just fell off the goddamn Lettuce truck in his plea to the Prime Minister to stop the government bill which comes into Law in April 2009 in which prevents children born to or adopted by Canadians outside of Canada from passing citizenship on to their children if they are also born abroad.

Bottom line is children born to naturalized Canadians would not have the same citizenship rights as children of those born in Canada.

Seems fair, because the few who are rich and successful will have no problem getting their kids into Canada, while many will try and scam as is always the case in order to suckle of the teats of the Canadian Taxpayer for generations to come.

Ottawa must do more to build ties with Canadians living abroad or risk losing the economic benefit of the country's large, educated, and sometimes influential, overseas population, according to a report from a think-tank on Canada's relations with Asia.

"As we have come to accept that overseas affiliates of Canadian corporations are net overseas assets that can generate long-term benefits for the country, now we need to consider the Canadian diaspora as a long-term asset to be cultivated, not spurned," said Kenny Zhang, of the Vancouver-based Asia-Pacific Foundation.

'Struggling' octuplets mom looks to (Welfare) I mean God for help

Barry Artiste Op/Ed

Aw yes the old tried and true way to scam cash from religious taxpayers in order to raise your Brood, go on national TV, plead your case of Idiocy, and then pull the God Scam, many Evangelists use this scam, so why not HER! Yes Jaysus, Oh Hep me Lawd (read Gullible Public).

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The California mother of newborn octuplets said on Monday she was counting on God to help provide for her family but acknowledged that she already was "struggling" financially to raise her first six children.

Nadya Suleman, 33, widely criticized for undergoing fertility treatments when she already had six children, expressed confidence in her ability to care for her brood during a nationally televised interview on NBC's "Today" show.

In addition to the six boys and two girls she gave birth to on January 26, Suleman is the mother of four older boys and two girls, including one set of twins, ranging in age from 2 to 7.

Divorced and living with her mother in suburban Los Angeles, she said all 14 were conceived with in vitro fertilization from a single sperm donor, identified only as a friend.

The Decline of the English-Speaking World

Barry Artiste Op/Ed

Well since I speak more than one language, I have something to fall back on!

Certainly this story will raise more than a few eyebrows.

I will defend all Western countries but I feel especially close to Britain, which makes it all the more sad to see how humiliated this once-great nation currently is. The English language once conquered the world. Now the rest of the world is conquering the English-speaking countries. If current trends continue, people in Singapore will know English while the nation that created the English language will cease to exist.

At the same time as sharia law has gained official recognition as a part of the British legal system and Muslims proudly talk about conquering the Western world, a British woman was arrested because of a supposedly "racist" doll she kept in her window. In al-Britannia a Muslim man can claim benefits for children with multiple wives and brag about subduing the country and reducing its traditional inhabitants to second-rate citizens or worse, but you cannot have a "racially insensitive" doll in your own home, at least not if you're white.

Experts say bogging down border would be a mistake

Photos

No footage found.

Barry Artiste Op/Ed

If Manley says it, I would take it to the bank.  Border crossings and delays sucks, but planes flying into skyscrapers suck even more!

In the directive, Napolitano said she wanted to determine "the vulnerabilities" of the U.S.-Canada border and how they can be improved.

The secretary is to receive an oral report on the matter on Tuesday, with a final report to follow a week later.

One of Napolitano's predecessors, as well as a former deputy prime minister of Canada, tell CTV's Power Play that any move to tighten border restrictions would be a mistake -- especially when more than $1 million worth of trade crosses the border every minute.

Former Liberal deputy prime minister John Manley says that the suggestion that the Canadian border poses a threat is nothing new in the world of bilateral politics between the U.S. and Canada.

What makes more since, Cash in your pocket or the Stimulus Bill?

By Wendy Herman, TCOT Project Servant Leader

Michael Patrick Leahy, co-founder of Top Conservatives on Twitter, has put forth an amazing alternative to the pork laden stimulus bill that the Senate is currently negotiating. At this date, we have not seen the "compromise bill" that turncoat Republican Senators Susan Collins, Olympia Snowe, and Arlen Specter have colluded on with their Democratic floor mates. However, we at TCOT are very certain that at almost $800 billion dollars it is still crammed with too much spending that will do nothing to stimulate the sluggish economy and put Americans back to work.

Mr. Leahy's entire plan can be seen here:

http://michaelpatrickleahy.blogspot.com/...d.html

This plan has one (single, lonely, effective) plank. IMMEDIATELY CUT ALL PERSONAL AND CORPORATE INCOME TAXES IN HALF FOR ALL TWELVE MONTHS OF 2009.

No new government offices. No frisbee parks. No swimming pools.

The "lost revenue" to the government would amount to about $800 billion, equal to what congress is recommending. However, that lost revenue would remain with you, the person who earned it. So we at TCOT got to thinking:

How would cutting our withholding in half effect our daily lives?

Thus, the TCOT CHALLENGE was born.

Below we'd like you to tell us what an extra 200, 300, 400 or more dollars a week would change in your world. What would you purchase? Where would you go? How would you invest it? If the government says that spending money drives this economy, what better way to reverse a down turn that pumping and immediate $60 billion into the economy every month. Hey, you earned it, why shouldn't you decide how it should be spent. We want to know specifically, how would PORKULUS (the current stimulus plan) benefit you personally in 2009? And would TCOT Plan or PORKULUS benefit you more?

Here is an example of how one family would use their hard earned cash:

http://michaelpatrickleahy.blogspot.com/...x.html

Female suicide bomber kills 28 in Sri Lanka

Barry Artiste Op/Ed

One wonders what possess those to mass kill civilians when carrying out killings of their intended victim.  Cowardice of course enters into it, when Mano O Mano is lost on those who are too chickenshit to face down an enemy, perferring to do it subvertly.

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka -- A suspected rebel suicide bomber killed 20 soldiers and eight civilians when she blew herself up Monday at a facility where government forces were processing Sri Lankans fleeing the northern war zone, the military said.

The bombing was the first major suicide attack in Sri Lanka in more than a month and led to fears the Tamil Tiger separatists -- boxed in by the military and on the verge of defeat -- will increasingly turn to guerrilla warfare in their battle against government forces.

Leaving the West: Tough times bring gangsters back East to Ottawa

Barry Artiste Op/Ed

Seems even Criminals and Drug Dealers have "Nancy Boy Gangsters" who don't like the Prairie Gangsters shooting at them, and opted for a more gentler city to ply their terror and drug dealing. Guess West Coast and Prairie Gangsters are made of stronger stuff! Run Away, Run Away!

OTTAWA — Ottawa street gang members who had moved out West to chase a dream of dealing drugs and getting rich are heading home, police say, forced back by tough times in their cutthroat trade.

There had been a steady flow of these street-level entrepreneurs, from Ottawa and elsewhere, who left their hometowns to deal drugs in Alberta when the economy there was red-hot.

But as the overall economy has worsened, so, too, have gang members’ fortunes: Now there is less money to be made and increased competition for the business that remains.

Additionally, gangs have seen the murders of their members by presumed rivals and have come under increased police scrutiny since moving to the Prairie province.

Legendary American rocker Bruce Springsteen has contributed a song to a CD compilation by the Odd Squad, a documentary production team made up of Vancouver police officers.

Springsteen’s song “Point Blank,” originally released in the 1980 album The River, fronts the non-profit group’s second CD release titled On the Beat Volume II, thanks to Chris Graham, the team’s “music guy” and long-time fan of the Boss.

“He has a big social conscience,” said Graham of their decision to appeal to Springsteen. “So when I wrote to him initially I said his endorsement would allow us to get other people involved, which is exactly what happened.”

Canada and Canadians should be "Bursting with Pride" the way they are treating our Countries founding peoples. Again, not to "Flog a Dead Horse" does it make sense that our Governments objective is to increase Immigration to 300,000 every year, when it can ill afford to care for it's own peoples?

Virtually every successive government and opposition parties from the past to to the ruling governments today have paved the way since our arrival to these shores to ensure aboriginal people stay in abject poverty and subsistence until they are no more.

What Fine Immigrants We Canadians turned out to be! We voted for these Government entities, so we are also part and parcel of the problem.

Many state, we have done enough already, giving 10 billion dollars annually to be distributed amongst 1.3 Million First Nations People, when you do the math, that equates to less than $6,000.00 each, out of that comes healthcare, housing, food, education and government administration fees.

Now how many Canadians do you know can survive on that "Princely Sum" every year?

Nice Chump Change in exchange for an entire Country!

The water taxi slices through the thin veneer of ocean ice, past the islands rising out of the morning mist, into the inlet, where forested mountains sweep down to the rocks.

Approaching isolated Flores Island, in the heart of the Clayoquot Sound UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, the water is dotted with abandoned, half sunken boats, a legacy of the vanished First Nations fishery.

The sign overlooking the dock, which should say Welcome to Ahousaht, is missing two letters, telling its own story of the troubled community where up to 800 members of the Ahousaht First Nation, out of a registered population of 1,876, live in a village of mouldy houses and rotting buildings.

Is Canada Immigration Swayed on Ethnic Votes? It Seems So!

Makes one wonder WTF our Government is up to when Ethnic Criminals facing deportation have our Canadian Government fight tooth and nail to keep Criminals in this country, yet a family from Russia face Deportation. The families only disgrace was the father was coerced to work for the KGB and spy on Japanese Businessmen.  Anyone who has half a brain knows, if you refuse to join the KGB and do their Bidding, you may as well put a gun to your head, cause you will be classed a traitor and sent to Siberia. All in all this Russian family were open about their past to Canada Immigration when they came to this great, if not politically flawed country we call Canada!

Guess not a lot of Russian immigrants vote Conservative or have tons of money, because if this Family came from China, Afghanistan or other parts of the world, Dollars to Tim Hortons Donuts our Politicians from every politicial party would be falling all over themselves trying to prevent their deportation, including issuing a work permit.  Criminals get into our county almost every day, and our Government officials seem non plussed about it, including the Terrorist Khadr family, whose son is currently in Gitmo.

Russians in a about face when countries around the world are looking at Protectionist measures, Russians are protesting Higher Tariffs for imported vehicles, a lifeblood for Russians where a Russian Made Car breaks down in the middle of winter in the middle of nowhere, could mean a Death Knell for the occupants.  Anyone who has experienced ownership of a Russian Made Vehicle or Riding, or Pushing one will certainly see why Imports are superior to Russian Auto Technology. I have lived in Moscow, and used Gypsy Cabs, as most were Japanese Reliable Cars or German Cars.  With Russian Taxis, they use Ladas, in which a few times when I was stuck to take a cab, one time I pushed and rode a Lada  taxi once from the Puskin Museum almost to Moscow University, the Cab Driver and I were cursing all the way as cars whizzed by us. A tow truck you say? Funny, I do not think Moscow own any!

Angered over mounting economic problems, thousands of people took to the streets in Moscow and other cities around Russia over the weekend to denounce President Dmitry Medvedev and Prime Minister Vladimir Putin in the largest display of public discontentment in years.

United Russia, the party that dominates Russian politics and is led by Putin, brought thousands of people to Manezh Square near the Kremlin to rally in support of Putin and Medvedev.

The largest anti-government rally took place Saturday in Vladivostok, where the Communist Party led some 2,500 people in a march against the government and a recent decision to increase tariffs on imported cars. The livelihood of many local residents depends on imported cars.

Vladivostok protesters carried banners reading, "Kremlin, we are against you," and some shouted slogans for Putin to resign, news agencies reported.

Along with a slew of other Ladies who gagged at the thought of being in the media spotlight when it was uncovered they too were shown Diversity (e.g some Married, Some Not!)  and accepting Differences (Positions)  As for President Obama, Obama should just say to Bill, You know Bill! Of course this plan will work, cause all Criminals are going to get a "Big Friggin Tattoo" on their Foreheads with "Criminal Gangster" across it. What a ludicrous idea to stop crime, much like Banning Handguns, Storeowners are not Physic, how can they tell if a criminal is a criminal.  Though BC is pretty much Ground Central for Criminals. Criminals will just go to the next town to buy their stuff or get a family member or associate to do it for them.

VANCOUVER -- Maybe the sight of a Mercedes racing down a busy street under a hail of bullets was the last straw for the citizens of Abbotsford.

The B.C. city of 135,000 in the Fraser Valley, about 60 kilometres east of Vancouver, prefers to be known more for its bucolic ambience than as a small-scale replica of the big, gang-infested city to the west.

But Abbotsford does have a gang problem -- police identify at least three -- so it's trying an old-time tactic to send a message to gangsters: Shunning.

Don't serve them in restaurants, bars or clubs. Don't sell them cars or electronics. In short, don't normalize their lifestyle and their place in the community.

Canadians paying high price of crime

Barry Artiste, Op/Ed

Of course no one can point an accusing finger at Vangroovy for adding to this horrendous Crime Bill, because as anyone knows it is rare the British Columbia Justice System ever sends anyone to jail!

Canadians paying high price of crime
Bill for keeping inmates comfy behind bars dings taxpayers $2.2B annually
By PETER ZIMONJIC, NATIONAL BUREAU

Canada's prison service is spending millions of taxpayer dollars on everything from dentures to prosthetic limbs.

Documents obtained through Access to Information reveal how Corrections Service Canada manages its annual budget of $2.2 billion to care for its 14,500 inmates.

In the 2007-08 financial year, the department spent more than $322,000 on dentures, $162,000 on prosthetic limbs, $256,000 on eyeglasses and almost $82,000 on hearing aids. The numbers do not include Atlantic Canada.

A partial picture of the cost of prison dentistry reveals that, excluding B.C. and Atlantic Canada, taxpayers spend $2.2 million just filling cavities and cleaning prisoner's teeth.

Government won't get 'blown off track' by job stats: PM

In my Opinion, and a valid Opinion at that!

It is refreshing Harper won't get "Blown" by Job stats, but we certainly know when Canada is in Dire Straits financially, Politicians of every stripe can always find Billions of dollars in Taxpayer Money to bring in 300,000 Immigrants every year into this country, and when they hit our shores, our government, feeds, houses. clothes, free healthcare, education and ESL courses etc.

Not to mention the 2 billion dollars annually of taxpayers money to feed, house, clothe, healthcare and legal costs etc just for the Illegal immigrants who are in Canada unlawfully, and the Canadian Government continues to support them financially cause the Canadian Government doesn't know what to do with them? Why is that insanity allowed to continue, while Canadians who are also taxpayers are out of work, some homeless?

Surely the Ethnic vote doesn't sway Harper's decision as well as the Liberals and NDP before him?

So when Harper states in the Media he is not "Blown", I beg to differ! Cause I am sure there is a little Spooning and Pillow Talk after as well!

Barry Artiste Pissed Off Canadian

Methinks an immediate Royal Commission on Immigration should be implemented as soon as possible, while we still have our jobs and homes. We need to halt immigration, till this country has zero unemployment and a healthy health care system and the Homeless and Seniors are take care of. Cause if we do not act Now, we may be next without a job or a home or country to come home to.

The federal government must "stick to the course" outlined in its massive economic stimulus plan despite the "bad news" of Canada shedding 129,000 jobs in January, Prime Minister Stephen Harper said Friday.

The prime minister made the comment in New Brunswick when asked about Statistics Canada's report on Friday, which said the country's unemployment rate shot up by 0.6 percentage points in January to 7.2 per cent. Almost all of the job losses were in full-time work.

Many Americans heard that a bipartition compromise on the stimulus bill had been reached today.  Well the word Bipartition is a bit of a stretch.  There were originally six Republican senators working on a compromise deal.  One by one each walked away from the process as they became aware that there was little the new, spirit of bipartition Obama Administration was willing to negotiate.  In the end three Republican Senators, two from Maine Senator Collins, and Senator Snowe Remained along with Pennsylvania Senator Arlen Specter.  The compromise package was touted as a massive reduction in spending down to 780 Billion dollars.  By the time the press release were all out to the major news networks that number had risen to 805 Billion, then by the late evening the number had risen to 840 billion.  When it would all be said an done.  The number of the compromise and spending cuts would rise above the number they were working with.

Political commentators, pundits, and everyday politicos began asking about the compromise bills text.  Inquiring when it wold be available for reading.  Like the false campaign promises about being a bipartition and transparent presidency there is no text for anyone to read.  In fact, the bill is probably not even to be found in writing on the Hill.

Today, Senator Collins was very close to walking away from the process giving the GOP the potential to filibuster the bill as no one is sure what it contains.  Since the vote for cloture would be close, talk is going around that Senator Ted Kennedy is going to be wheeled in to cast his vote to make the potential for filibuster to fade with one vote needed by Republicans.

So If you would like to read the new bill, you can't.  Nor can anyone.  The only folks who know what it contains is President Obama and Rob Emmanuel, Olympia Snow, and Arlin Specter. Welcome to the age of Openness, Transparency, and Bipartisanship.

A side note, 65 thousand petitions arrived on the Hill with Senator Jim De Mint who is admittedly against the stimulus package.  The petitions that arrived are against the stimulus plan.  The Phones at the Capital have been overflowing with most Senators mailboxes full.  The Bill has only 37% support by the American people.  But for Democrats, they have made it clear that they have won and they are writing the Bill.  That they have done which brought no Republican voting for the House Bill and potentially only 3 republicans in the Senate.

.

Now that there is news of a compromise reached between the Senate Democrats plus GOP Senators Susan Collins and Arlen Specter, the obvious question is: can we read the compromise bill text?

Short answer: no! As of now, no text has been released, and it is highly likely that as of Friday evening, it doesn't even exist. Our sources on the Hill indicate that "it is probably just a bunch of numbers scratched on a napkin right now."

We are of course eagerly awaiting the post-napkin version of the compromise, and will get it posted here as soon as it becomes available.

Kyrgyzstan Moves to Close U.S. Base

Barry Artiste Op/Ed
I guess some countries are not waiting for US President Obama to move his US Troops out of Dodge, as the Kyrgyzstan Government has decided to force the US hand and do it for them in giving the US Government 180 days to pack up and get out of this backwater (desert) country.

BISHKEK, Kyrgyzstan -- The Kyrgyz government took the first steps Wednesday to close a U.S. military air base that is vital for supplying U.S.-led troops fighting in Afghanistan.

The Kyrgyz government sent parliament a decree on closing the Manas base on Wednesday.

Adakhan Madumarov, secretary of the Kyrgyz Security Council, said in Moscow that the U.S. military would be given 180 days to close its operations and leave once the two sides had exchanged formal diplomatic notes outlining the intention.

"The government has made its decision," he told reporters without saying when the exchange was likely to happen.

Parliament sources said it could start debating the decree as soon as Thursday. Parliamentary approval is seen as a formality since the chamber is dominated by the pro-presidential Ak Zhol party.

U.S. military personnel will be given 180 days to close operations and leave once the final decision is made.

Fines won't keep N.L. man from riding snowblower

Barry Artiste Op/Ed
You know Police have way too much time on their hands, when they are cruising the snow covered streets of Corner Brook Newfoundland looking for people to arrest or fine.  Even the Simpsons Chief Wiggum had better common sense it seems.

Corner Brook, N.L. municipal police recently charged Pat Hickey after they observed him perched atop his John Deere snowblower crossing the roadway from his own home to his neighbour's property just a few metres away.

Hickey purchased his riding snowblower earlier this winter and has been voluntarily clearing snow from many of his neighbours' driveways, most of whom are seniors.

"I thought it would be nice to help them out but the city didn't see it that way," Hickey told Canada AM via telephone from Corner Brook on Thursday.

Last week, the city Hickey slapped with a ticket, charging him of operating a recreational vehicle on a city street which is in violation of a municipal by-law. The city claimed Hickey was causing traffic disruptions.

Barely a week goes by in which my Islamic faith does not face a fresh round of scrutiny. If it is not a suicide bomber blowing himself up in an Iraqi mosque screaming “Allahu Akbar” it is news that an imam in Malaysia has declared the practice of Yoga sinful. If it is not a Toronto Imam defending suicide bombing on a TVO talk show, it is a Muslim woman writing a column in a Canadian daily, advocating the introduction of shariah law in Canada.

Guess it is too late to have a SEC Chicken Cull.

He blew the whistle – and no one listened By PAUL WALDIE, Globe and Mail Update Harry Markopolos spent 17 years in the U.S. Army Reserve and managed troops overseas, but he has never been so scared as when he began investigating Bernard Madoff.

“I thought I was a dead man,” Mr. Markopolos told a congressional committee Wednesday. “I didn't think I was long for this world.”

Mr. Markopolos, a former fund manager, has been hailed as a whistleblower in the Madoff case, having spent eight years probing Mr. Madoff's New York-based investment firm and trying to persuade the Securities and Exchange Commission to get involved. During his testimony Wednesday, which included discussions about complex financial products and his fears about the Russian mob, Mr. Markopolos railed against regulators, The Wall Street Journal and some accountants for failing to pick up on the alleged $50-billion (U.S.) Ponzi scheme.

Ancient, gargantuan snakes ate crocs for breakfast

My 20 year old son tells me when he goes to clubs, there are Ancient Cougars who eat young men as a nightcap.

The remains of the world's biggest snakes were discovered near the equator and scientists say the finding will shed new light on how ecosystems respond to climate change.

In total, 28 individual snakes were found in northeastern Colombia's Cerrejon open-pit mine. The largest eight of the 28 snakes would have weighed about 2,500 pounds and were between 12 to 15 metres in length.

In comparison, the largest snakes alive today are the green anacondas, which measure about 7.5 metres long and the reticulated pythons, which measure about nine metres long.

Paleontologists have named the snake Titanoboa cerrejonensis, which means titanic boa from Cerrejon -- one of the world's largest open-pit coal mines.

Scientists Discover a Planet, just like Earth!

Barry Artiste Op/Ed

Scientists say they have found a planet just like Earth, except without all the "Political infighting, Wars, and Bitching"!

Newest planetary discovery is small, fast and hot
A European space telescope has found a unique planet 390 light years away with a diameter less than twice that of the Earth, making it the slimmest planet yet detected outside our solar system.

 03/02/2009 2:38:30 PM
CBC News

The planet also lies very close to its parent star - about 2.5 million kilometres - and so completes an orbit in a speedy 20 hours. By comparison, the closest planet to our sun, Mercury, orbits at an average distance of 58 million kilometres and completes a circuit of the sun once every 88 days.

European astronomers, who announced the finding Tuesday at a symposium in Paris, also believe the planet may be the fastest yet discovered.

Support for Stimulus Plan Falls to 37%, Full of Political Payoffs

With each passing day, as the American people get wind of what the stimulus plan actually contains, Support continues to dwindle.  Why?  The Bill is loaded with pork.  Pork is measures added to a bill to make it more tasty for a Senator who is a bit iffy about voting for the measure and gets a 'payoff' if you will by adding something that Senators constituents want. Today, while on the Senate floor, Missouri's Republican Kit Bond said, “This bill is a stimulus bill, as it will stimulate debt for our grandchildren”.

Here are some of the examples of the Pork or payoffs that are being added to the Bill that could not be called,  by a stretch of anyones imagination,  stimulating to the economy which is what HR1 and SB1 is supposed to be about.  Something that is being called by Illinois Senator and majority whip Dick Durbin as President Obama's most important priority.

Support for the economic recovery plan working its way through Congress has fallen again this week. For the first time, a plurality of voters nationwide oppose the $800-billion-plus plan.

The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey found that 37% favor the legislation, 43% are opposed, and 20% are not sure.

Two weeks ago, 45% supported the plan. Last week, 42% supported it.

Opposition has grown from 34% two weeks ago to 39% last week and 43% today.

Sixty-four percent (64%) of Democrats still support the plan. That figure is down from 74% a week ago. Just 13% of Republicans and 27% of those not affiliated with either major party agree.

Canada a desired location for Guantanamo Bay detainees

Barry Artiste Op/Ed

This story is certainly a hotbed topic, with the majority of Canadian polls stating Canada doesn't want any detainees from Gitmo on Canadian Soil according to the CBC News Broadcast being delivered today.

Many state if they are innocent, as the US state, why isn't Obama allowing them to immigrate to the good old USA?

Many Guantanamo Bay detainees cleared of terrorist charges and slated for release have expressed a desire to live in Canada, and refugee organizations are calling for sponsors.

The Canadian Council for Refugees (CCR), a non-profit umbrella group representing several non-governmental organizations and churches, is leading the plea, which goes out to groups and private individuals alike. The ability for citizens to sponsor refugees is unique to Canada, according to CCR executive director Janet Dench, noting refugees to every other country must be government-sponsored.

Three slayings in 24 hours for Metro Vancouver
Victim in second fatal shooting rented Surrey penthouse where six were murdered in 2007

By Kim Bolan, Vancouver Sun
February 4, 2009 1:00 AM

METRO VANCOUVER — A man gunned down in the parking lot of Guildford Town Centre Tuesday was the same person who rented the Surrey penthouse where six people were brutally murdered in October 2007, The Vancouver Sun has learned.

Raphael Baldini had appeared in Vancouver Provincial Court earlier Tuesday on assault and uttering threats charges laid in October 2008.

He was also facing a series of gun charges filed against him in November 2007, just weeks after six people — including innocent bystanders Chris Mohan and Ed Schellenberg — were shot execution-style in suite 1505 of the Balmoral Tower, which Baldini had been renting.

The 21-year-old Baldini was sprayed with gunfire in the parking lot of the busy Surrey mall about 5:20 p.m. Tuesday — the second of three targeted hits in Metro Vancouver in less than 24 hours.

Tom Daschle's Letter to Committee on Tax Issues

February 1, 2009

Dear Chairman Baucus and Senator Grassley:

Thank you for the work you and the Committee are doing to move forward on my nomination by President Obama to be Secretary of Health and Human Services. I know that despite the heavy workload from both the Economic Recovery Act and SCHIP, as well as all the nominees the Committee is handling, your staff has worked diligently on my nomination. I also appreciate the strong commitment to fairness you both have expressed.

As you can well imagine, I am deeply embarrassed and disappointed by the errors that required me to amend my tax returns. I apologize for the errors and profoundly regret that you have had to devote time to them. I will be happy to answer any Committee members’ questions about these issues. In the meantime, as a follow-up to our conversations, I would like to briefly review three issues discussed at my meeting with your staff and mentioned in our meeting on Thursday.

Last fall, when I was being considered for this position, the Presidential Transition Team’s vetters reviewed my records. During the course of those reviews, the vetting team flagged charitable contributions they felt were deducted in error. When my accountant realized I would need to file amended returns, he suggested addressing another matter I had raised with him earlier in the year: whether the use of a car service offered to me by a close friend might be a tax issue. In December, my accountant advised me that it should be reported as imputed income in the amended returns.

At about the same time, the friend’s company, a consulting client, informed my accountant of a clerical error it had made on the Form 1099 it provided to me and reported to the IRS for 2007. In an effort to ensure full compliance and the most complete disclosure possible of my personal finances, we remedied these issues by filing amended tax returns with full payments, including interest. We provided all this information to the Committee in addition to the completed Committee questionnaire and my responses to your staff’s questions. I disclosed this information to the Committee voluntarily, and paid the taxes and any interest owed promptly. My mistakes were unintentional.

I am available to answer any further questions you might have and look forward to coming before the Committee in the very near future to discuss the critical health and human services issues facing our country. Should I be approved by your Committee and confirmed by the Senate, I look forward to working in partnership with you both to pass meaningful legislation that will help Americans get the health reform they need and deserve and to ensure that all HHS programs and activities reflect a commitment to responding to the needs of our citizens in a manner that is compassionate, cost-effective, and transparent.

Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,

Tom Daschle

White House: Daschle's Tax Failure Was a 'Serious Mistake'

Photos

Back tax issues doesn't seem to  bother President Obama when picking cabinet positions.  President Obama and other top Democrats are calling failure to pay taxes a serious but forgivable mistake.  When Linda Chavez was up for Labor Secretary in 2001 under President Bush, she was ousted quickly due to tax issues.  In 1993 Zoe Baird withdrew as Attorney General nominee after failing to pay taxes.  The right is wondering if this is  change Americans can be deceived in?  Paying ones taxes was toughed as being  Patriotic by the now Vice-President Biden.  Based on Bidens criteria, are Obama's nominees un-patriotic?

The White House today called Tom Daschle's failure to pay more than $100,000 in back taxes a "serious mistake," but the president still "absolutely" supports his nomination to be secretary of Health and Human Services.

ExpandIn this Dec. 11, 2008 file photo, President-elect Barack Obama, right, stands with Health and Human Services Secretary-designate, former Senate Majority Leader Thomas Daschle, during a news conference in Chicago. Daschle recently filed amended tax returns to report $128,203 in unpaid taxes and $11,964 in interest, according to a Senate document obtained by The Associated Press. The White House backing came on a day when the beleaguered nominee apologized and said he was "deeply embarrassed" over the tax flap.

In an effort to end the controversy over Daschle's nomination as HHS secretary, a key Democrat also voiced his support and Daschle agreed to be grilled about his tax issues today by the 23 members of the Senate Finance Committee.
