Canadian expats risk becoming 'second-class' citizens: study

Barry Artiste Op/Ed

Mr. Kenny Zhang, must think we are Niave Canadians who just fell off the goddamn Lettuce truck in his plea to the Prime Minister to stop the government bill which comes into Law in April 2009 in which prevents children born to or adopted by Canadians outside of Canada from passing citizenship on to their children if they are also born abroad.

Bottom line is children born to naturalized Canadians would not have the same citizenship rights as children of those born in Canada.

Seems fair, because the few who are rich and successful will have no problem getting their kids into Canada, while many will try and scam as is always the case in order to suckle of the teats of the Canadian Taxpayer for generations to come.

Ottawa must do more to build ties with Canadians living abroad or risk losing the economic benefit of the country's large, educated, and sometimes influential, overseas population, according to a report from a think-tank on Canada's relations with Asia.

"As we have come to accept that overseas affiliates of Canadian corporations are net overseas assets that can generate long-term benefits for the country, now we need to consider the Canadian diaspora as a long-term asset to be cultivated, not spurned," said Kenny Zhang, of the Vancouver-based Asia-Pacific Foundation.

'Struggling' octuplets mom looks to (Welfare) I mean God for help

Barry Artiste Op/Ed

Aw yes the old tried and true way to scam cash from religious taxpayers in order to raise your Brood, go on national TV, plead your case of Idiocy, and then pull the God Scam, many Evangelists use this scam, so why not HER! Yes Jaysus, Oh Hep me Lawd (read Gullible Public).

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The California mother of newborn octuplets said on Monday she was counting on God to help provide for her family but acknowledged that she already was "struggling" financially to raise her first six children.

Nadya Suleman, 33, widely criticized for undergoing fertility treatments when she already had six children, expressed confidence in her ability to care for her brood during a nationally televised interview on NBC's "Today" show.

In addition to the six boys and two girls she gave birth to on January 26, Suleman is the mother of four older boys and two girls, including one set of twins, ranging in age from 2 to 7.

Divorced and living with her mother in suburban Los Angeles, she said all 14 were conceived with in vitro fertilization from a single sperm donor, identified only as a friend.

The Decline of the English-Speaking World

Barry Artiste Op/Ed

Well since I speak more than one language, I have something to fall back on!

Certainly this story will raise more than a few eyebrows.

I will defend all Western countries but I feel especially close to Britain, which makes it all the more sad to see how humiliated this once-great nation currently is. The English language once conquered the world. Now the rest of the world is conquering the English-speaking countries. If current trends continue, people in Singapore will know English while the nation that created the English language will cease to exist.

At the same time as sharia law has gained official recognition as a part of the British legal system and Muslims proudly talk about conquering the Western world, a British woman was arrested because of a supposedly "racist" doll she kept in her window. In al-Britannia a Muslim man can claim benefits for children with multiple wives and brag about subduing the country and reducing its traditional inhabitants to second-rate citizens or worse, but you cannot have a "racially insensitive" doll in your own home, at least not if you're white.

Experts say bogging down border would be a mistake

If Manley says it, I would take it to the bank.  Border crossings and delays sucks, but planes flying into skyscrapers suck even more!

In the directive, Napolitano said she wanted to determine "the vulnerabilities" of the U.S.-Canada border and how they can be improved.

The secretary is to receive an oral report on the matter on Tuesday, with a final report to follow a week later.

One of Napolitano's predecessors, as well as a former deputy prime minister of Canada, tell CTV's Power Play that any move to tighten border restrictions would be a mistake -- especially when more than $1 million worth of trade crosses the border every minute.

Former Liberal deputy prime minister John Manley says that the suggestion that the Canadian border poses a threat is nothing new in the world of bilateral politics between the U.S. and Canada.

What makes more since, Cash in your pocket or the Stimulus Bill?

By Wendy Herman, TCOT Project Servant Leader

Michael Patrick Leahy, co-founder of Top Conservatives on Twitter, has put forth an amazing alternative to the pork laden stimulus bill that the Senate is currently negotiating. At this date, we have not seen the "compromise bill" that turncoat Republican Senators Susan Collins, Olympia Snowe, and Arlen Specter have colluded on with their Democratic floor mates. However, we at TCOT are very certain that at almost $800 billion dollars it is still crammed with too much spending that will do nothing to stimulate the sluggish economy and put Americans back to work.

Mr. Leahy's entire plan can be seen here:

http://michaelpatrickleahy.blogspot.com/...d.html

This plan has one (single, lonely, effective) plank. IMMEDIATELY CUT ALL PERSONAL AND CORPORATE INCOME TAXES IN HALF FOR ALL TWELVE MONTHS OF 2009.

No new government offices. No frisbee parks. No swimming pools.

The "lost revenue" to the government would amount to about $800 billion, equal to what congress is recommending. However, that lost revenue would remain with you, the person who earned it. So we at TCOT got to thinking:

How would cutting our withholding in half effect our daily lives?

Thus, the TCOT CHALLENGE was born.

Below we'd like you to tell us what an extra 200, 300, 400 or more dollars a week would change in your world. What would you purchase? Where would you go? How would you invest it? If the government says that spending money drives this economy, what better way to reverse a down turn that pumping and immediate $60 billion into the economy every month. Hey, you earned it, why shouldn't you decide how it should be spent. We want to know specifically, how would PORKULUS (the current stimulus plan) benefit you personally in 2009? And would TCOT Plan or PORKULUS benefit you more?

Here is an example of how one family would use their hard earned cash:

http://michaelpatrickleahy.blogspot.com/...x.html

Female suicide bomber kills 28 in Sri Lanka

Barry Artiste Op/Ed

One wonders what possess those to mass kill civilians when carrying out killings of their intended victim.  Cowardice of course enters into it, when Mano O Mano is lost on those who are too chickenshit to face down an enemy, perferring to do it subvertly.

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka -- A suspected rebel suicide bomber killed 20 soldiers and eight civilians when she blew herself up Monday at a facility where government forces were processing Sri Lankans fleeing the northern war zone, the military said.

The bombing was the first major suicide attack in Sri Lanka in more than a month and led to fears the Tamil Tiger separatists -- boxed in by the military and on the verge of defeat -- will increasingly turn to guerrilla warfare in their battle against government forces.

Leaving the West: Tough times bring gangsters back East to Ottawa

Barry Artiste Op/Ed

Seems even Criminals and Drug Dealers have "Nancy Boy Gangsters" who don't like the Prairie Gangsters shooting at them, and opted for a more gentler city to ply their terror and drug dealing. Guess West Coast and Prairie Gangsters are made of stronger stuff! Run Away, Run Away!

OTTAWA — Ottawa street gang members who had moved out West to chase a dream of dealing drugs and getting rich are heading home, police say, forced back by tough times in their cutthroat trade.

There had been a steady flow of these street-level entrepreneurs, from Ottawa and elsewhere, who left their hometowns to deal drugs in Alberta when the economy there was red-hot.

But as the overall economy has worsened, so, too, have gang members’ fortunes: Now there is less money to be made and increased competition for the business that remains.

Additionally, gangs have seen the murders of their members by presumed rivals and have come under increased police scrutiny since moving to the Prairie province.

Legendary American rocker Bruce Springsteen has contributed a song to a CD compilation by the Odd Squad, a documentary production team made up of Vancouver police officers.

Springsteen’s song “Point Blank,” originally released in the 1980 album The River, fronts the non-profit group’s second CD release titled On the Beat Volume II, thanks to Chris Graham, the team’s “music guy” and long-time fan of the Boss.

“He has a big social conscience,” said Graham of their decision to appeal to Springsteen. “So when I wrote to him initially I said his endorsement would allow us to get other people involved, which is exactly what happened.”

Canada and Canadians should be "Bursting with Pride" the way they are treating our Countries founding peoples. Again, not to "Flog a Dead Horse" does it make sense that our Governments objective is to increase Immigration to 300,000 every year, when it can ill afford to care for it's own peoples?

Virtually every successive government and opposition parties from the past to to the ruling governments today have paved the way since our arrival to these shores to ensure aboriginal people stay in abject poverty and subsistence until they are no more.

What Fine Immigrants We Canadians turned out to be! We voted for these Government entities, so we are also part and parcel of the problem.

Many state, we have done enough already, giving 10 billion dollars annually to be distributed amongst 1.3 Million First Nations People, when you do the math, that equates to less than $6,000.00 each, out of that comes healthcare, housing, food, education and government administration fees.

Now how many Canadians do you know can survive on that "Princely Sum" every year?

Nice Chump Change in exchange for an entire Country!

The water taxi slices through the thin veneer of ocean ice, past the islands rising out of the morning mist, into the inlet, where forested mountains sweep down to the rocks.

Approaching isolated Flores Island, in the heart of the Clayoquot Sound UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, the water is dotted with abandoned, half sunken boats, a legacy of the vanished First Nations fishery.

The sign overlooking the dock, which should say Welcome to Ahousaht, is missing two letters, telling its own story of the troubled community where up to 800 members of the Ahousaht First Nation, out of a registered population of 1,876, live in a village of mouldy houses and rotting buildings.

Is Canada Immigration Swayed on Ethnic Votes? It Seems So!

Makes one wonder WTF our Government is up to when Ethnic Criminals facing deportation have our Canadian Government fight tooth and nail to keep Criminals in this country, yet a family from Russia face Deportation. The families only disgrace was the father was coerced to work for the KGB and spy on Japanese Businessmen.  Anyone who has half a brain knows, if you refuse to join the KGB and do their Bidding, you may as well put a gun to your head, cause you will be classed a traitor and sent to Siberia. All in all this Russian family were open about their past to Canada Immigration when they came to this great, if not politically flawed country we call Canada!

Guess not a lot of Russian immigrants vote Conservative or have tons of money, because if this Family came from China, Afghanistan or other parts of the world, Dollars to Tim Hortons Donuts our Politicians from every politicial party would be falling all over themselves trying to prevent their deportation, including issuing a work permit.  Criminals get into our county almost every day, and our Government officials seem non plussed about it, including the Terrorist Khadr family, whose son is currently in Gitmo.

Russians in a about face when countries around the world are looking at Protectionist measures, Russians are protesting Higher Tariffs for imported vehicles, a lifeblood for Russians where a Russian Made Car breaks down in the middle of winter in the middle of nowhere, could mean a Death Knell for the occupants.  Anyone who has experienced ownership of a Russian Made Vehicle or Riding, or Pushing one will certainly see why Imports are superior to Russian Auto Technology. I have lived in Moscow, and used Gypsy Cabs, as most were Japanese Reliable Cars or German Cars.  With Russian Taxis, they use Ladas, in which a few times when I was stuck to take a cab, one time I pushed and rode a Lada  taxi once from the Puskin Museum almost to Moscow University, the Cab Driver and I were cursing all the way as cars whizzed by us. A tow truck you say? Funny, I do not think Moscow own any!

Angered over mounting economic problems, thousands of people took to the streets in Moscow and other cities around Russia over the weekend to denounce President Dmitry Medvedev and Prime Minister Vladimir Putin in the largest display of public discontentment in years.

United Russia, the party that dominates Russian politics and is led by Putin, brought thousands of people to Manezh Square near the Kremlin to rally in support of Putin and Medvedev.

The largest anti-government rally took place Saturday in Vladivostok, where the Communist Party led some 2,500 people in a march against the government and a recent decision to increase tariffs on imported cars. The livelihood of many local residents depends on imported cars.

Vladivostok protesters carried banners reading, "Kremlin, we are against you," and some shouted slogans for Putin to resign, news agencies reported.

Along with a slew of other Ladies who gagged at the thought of being in the media spotlight when it was uncovered they too were shown Diversity (e.g some Married, Some Not!)  and accepting Differences (Positions)  As for President Obama, Obama should just say to Bill, You know Bill! Of course this plan will work, cause all Criminals are going to get a "Big Friggin Tattoo" on their Foreheads with "Criminal Gangster" across it. What a ludicrous idea to stop crime, much like Banning Handguns, Storeowners are not Physic, how can they tell if a criminal is a criminal.  Though BC is pretty much Ground Central for Criminals. Criminals will just go to the next town to buy their stuff or get a family member or associate to do it for them.

VANCOUVER -- Maybe the sight of a Mercedes racing down a busy street under a hail of bullets was the last straw for the citizens of Abbotsford.

The B.C. city of 135,000 in the Fraser Valley, about 60 kilometres east of Vancouver, prefers to be known more for its bucolic ambience than as a small-scale replica of the big, gang-infested city to the west.

But Abbotsford does have a gang problem -- police identify at least three -- so it's trying an old-time tactic to send a message to gangsters: Shunning.

Don't serve them in restaurants, bars or clubs. Don't sell them cars or electronics. In short, don't normalize their lifestyle and their place in the community.

Canadians paying high price of crime
Bill for keeping inmates comfy behind bars dings taxpayers $2.2B annually
By PETER ZIMONJIC, NATIONAL BUREAU

Canada's prison service is spending millions of taxpayer dollars on everything from dentures to prosthetic limbs.

Documents obtained through Access to Information reveal how Corrections Service Canada manages its annual budget of $2.2 billion to care for its 14,500 inmates.

In the 2007-08 financial year, the department spent more than $322,000 on dentures, $162,000 on prosthetic limbs, $256,000 on eyeglasses and almost $82,000 on hearing aids. The numbers do not include Atlantic Canada.

A partial picture of the cost of prison dentistry reveals that, excluding B.C. and Atlantic Canada, taxpayers spend $2.2 million just filling cavities and cleaning prisoner's teeth.

Government won't get 'blown off track' by job stats: PM

Barry Artiste Op/Ed

In my Opinion, and a valid Opinion at that!

It is refreshing Harper won't get "Blown" by Job stats, but we certainly know when Canada is in Dire Straits financially, Politicians of every stripe can always find Billions of dollars in Taxpayer Money to bring in 300,000 Immigrants every year into this country, and when they hit our shores, our government, feeds, houses. clothes, free healthcare, education and ESL courses etc.

Not to mention the 2 billion dollars annually of taxpayers money to feed, house, clothe, healthcare and legal costs etc just for the Illegal immigrants who are in Canada unlawfully, and the Canadian Government continues to support them financially cause the Canadian Government doesn't know what to do with them? Why is that insanity allowed to continue, while Canadians who are also taxpayers are out of work, some homeless?

Surely the Ethnic vote doesn't sway Harper's decision as well as the Liberals and NDP before him?

So when Harper states in the Media he is not "Blown", I beg to differ! Cause I am sure there is a little Spooning and Pillow Talk after as well!

Barry Artiste Pissed Off Canadian

Methinks an immediate Royal Commission on Immigration should be implemented as soon as possible, while we still have our jobs and homes. We need to halt immigration, till this country has zero unemployment and a healthy health care system and the Homeless and Seniors are take care of. Cause if we do not act Now, we may be next without a job or a home or country to come home to.

The federal government must "stick to the course" outlined in its massive economic stimulus plan despite the "bad news" of Canada shedding 129,000 jobs in January, Prime Minister Stephen Harper said Friday.

The prime minister made the comment in New Brunswick when asked about Statistics Canada's report on Friday, which said the country's unemployment rate shot up by 0.6 percentage points in January to 7.2 per cent. Almost all of the job losses were in full-time work.

By Albert N. Milliron, Editor Politisite.com, Iron Mill Interactive Media, Inc.

Many Americans heard that a bipartition compromise on the stimulus bill had been reached today.  Well the word Bipartition is a bit of a stretch.  There were originally six Republican senators working on a compromise deal.  One by one each walked away from the process as they became aware that there was little the new, spirit of bipartition Obama Administration was willing to negotiate.  In the end three Republican Senators, two from Maine Senator Collins, and Senator Snowe Remained along with Pennsylvania Senator Arlen Specter.  The compromise package was touted as a massive reduction in spending down to 780 Billion dollars.  By the time the press release were all out to the major news networks that number had risen to 805 Billion, then by the late evening the number had risen to 840 billion.  When it would all be said an done.  The number of the compromise and spending cuts would rise above the number they were working with.

Political commentators, pundits, and everyday politicos began asking about the compromise bills text.  Inquiring when it wold be available for reading.  Like the false campaign promises about being a bipartition and transparent presidency there is no text for anyone to read.  In fact, the bill is probably not even to be found in writing on the Hill.

Today, Senator Collins was very close to walking away from the process giving the GOP the potential to filibuster the bill as no one is sure what it contains.  Since the vote for cloture would be close, talk is going around that Senator Ted Kennedy is going to be wheeled in to cast his vote to make the potential for filibuster to fade with one vote needed by Republicans.

So If you would like to read the new bill, you can't.  Nor can anyone.  The only folks who know what it contains is President Obama and Rob Emmanuel, Olympia Snow, and Arlin Specter. Welcome to the age of Openness, Transparency, and Bipartisanship.

A side note, 65 thousand petitions arrived on the Hill with Senator Jim De Mint who is admittedly against the stimulus package.  The petitions that arrived are against the stimulus plan.  The Phones at the Capital have been overflowing with most Senators mailboxes full.  The Bill has only 37% support by the American people.  But for Democrats, they have made it clear that they have won and they are writing the Bill.  That they have done which brought no Republican voting for the House Bill and potentially only 3 republicans in the Senate.

Now that there is news of a compromise reached between the Senate Democrats plus GOP Senators Susan Collins and Arlen Specter, the obvious question is: can we read the compromise bill text?

Short answer: no! As of now, no text has been released, and it is highly likely that as of Friday evening, it doesn't even exist. Our sources on the Hill indicate that "it is probably just a bunch of numbers scratched on a napkin right now."

We are of course eagerly awaiting the post-napkin version of the compromise, and will get it posted here as soon as it becomes available.

Kyrgyzstan Moves to Close U.S. Base

Barry Artiste Op/Ed
I guess some countries are not waiting for US President Obama to move his US Troops out of Dodge, as the Kyrgyzstan Government has decided to force the US hand and do it for them in giving the US Government 180 days to pack up and get out of this backwater (desert) country.

BISHKEK, Kyrgyzstan -- The Kyrgyz government took the first steps Wednesday to close a U.S. military air base that is vital for supplying U.S.-led troops fighting in Afghanistan.

The Kyrgyz government sent parliament a decree on closing the Manas base on Wednesday.

Adakhan Madumarov, secretary of the Kyrgyz Security Council, said in Moscow that the U.S. military would be given 180 days to close its operations and leave once the two sides had exchanged formal diplomatic notes outlining the intention.

"The government has made its decision," he told reporters without saying when the exchange was likely to happen.

Parliament sources said it could start debating the decree as soon as Thursday. Parliamentary approval is seen as a formality since the chamber is dominated by the pro-presidential Ak Zhol party.

U.S. military personnel will be given 180 days to close operations and leave once the final decision is made.

Fines won't keep N.L. man from riding snowblower

Barry Artiste Op/Ed
You know Police have way too much time on their hands, when they are cruising the snow covered streets of Corner Brook Newfoundland looking for people to arrest or fine.  Even the Simpsons Chief Wiggum had better common sense it seems.

Corner Brook, N.L. municipal police recently charged Pat Hickey after they observed him perched atop his John Deere snowblower crossing the roadway from his own home to his neighbour's property just a few metres away.

Hickey purchased his riding snowblower earlier this winter and has been voluntarily clearing snow from many of his neighbours' driveways, most of whom are seniors.

"I thought it would be nice to help them out but the city didn't see it that way," Hickey told Canada AM via telephone from Corner Brook on Thursday.

Last week, the city Hickey slapped with a ticket, charging him of operating a recreational vehicle on a city street which is in violation of a municipal by-law. The city claimed Hickey was causing traffic disruptions.

Barely a week goes by in which my Islamic faith does not face a fresh round of scrutiny. If it is not a suicide bomber blowing himself up in an Iraqi mosque screaming “Allahu Akbar” it is news that an imam in Malaysia has declared the practice of Yoga sinful. If it is not a Toronto Imam defending suicide bombing on a TVO talk show, it is a Muslim woman writing a column in a Canadian daily, advocating the introduction of shariah law in Canada.

3,500 Chickens in Fenway Park Cannot find 1st Base :Madoff Scam!

Barry Artiste Op/Ed

Guess it is too late to have a SEC Chicken Cull.

He blew the whistle – and no one listened By PAUL WALDIE, Globe and Mail Update Harry Markopolos spent 17 years in the U.S. Army Reserve and managed troops overseas, but he has never been so scared as when he began investigating Bernard Madoff.

“I thought I was a dead man,” Mr. Markopolos told a congressional committee Wednesday. “I didn't think I was long for this world.”

Mr. Markopolos, a former fund manager, has been hailed as a whistleblower in the Madoff case, having spent eight years probing Mr. Madoff's New York-based investment firm and trying to persuade the Securities and Exchange Commission to get involved. During his testimony Wednesday, which included discussions about complex financial products and his fears about the Russian mob, Mr. Markopolos railed against regulators, The Wall Street Journal and some accountants for failing to pick up on the alleged $50-billion (U.S.) Ponzi scheme.

Ancient, gargantuan snakes ate crocs for breakfast

My 20 year old son tells me when he goes to clubs, there are Ancient Cougars who eat young men as a nightcap.

The remains of the world's biggest snakes were discovered near the equator and scientists say the finding will shed new light on how ecosystems respond to climate change.

In total, 28 individual snakes were found in northeastern Colombia's Cerrejon open-pit mine. The largest eight of the 28 snakes would have weighed about 2,500 pounds and were between 12 to 15 metres in length.

In comparison, the largest snakes alive today are the green anacondas, which measure about 7.5 metres long and the reticulated pythons, which measure about nine metres long.

Paleontologists have named the snake Titanoboa cerrejonensis, which means titanic boa from Cerrejon -- one of the world's largest open-pit coal mines.

Scientists Discover a Planet, just like Earth!

Barry Artiste Op/Ed

Scientists say they have found a planet just like Earth, except without all the "Political infighting, Wars, and Bitching"!

Newest planetary discovery is small, fast and hot
A European space telescope has found a unique planet 390 light years away with a diameter less than twice that of the Earth, making it the slimmest planet yet detected outside our solar system.

 03/02/2009 2:38:30 PM
CBC News

The planet also lies very close to its parent star - about 2.5 million kilometres - and so completes an orbit in a speedy 20 hours. By comparison, the closest planet to our sun, Mercury, orbits at an average distance of 58 million kilometres and completes a circuit of the sun once every 88 days.

European astronomers, who announced the finding Tuesday at a symposium in Paris, also believe the planet may be the fastest yet discovered.

Support for Stimulus Plan Falls to 37%, Full of Political Payoffs

With each passing day, as the American people get wind of what the stimulus plan actually contains, Support continues to dwindle.  Why?  The Bill is loaded with pork.  Pork is measures added to a bill to make it more tasty for a Senator who is a bit iffy about voting for the measure and gets a 'payoff' if you will by adding something that Senators constituents want. Today, while on the Senate floor, Missouri's Republican Kit Bond said, “This bill is a stimulus bill, as it will stimulate debt for our grandchildren”.

Here are some of the examples of the Pork or payoffs that are being added to the Bill that could not be called,  by a stretch of anyones imagination,  stimulating to the economy which is what HR1 and SB1 is supposed to be about.  Something that is being called by Illinois Senator and majority whip Dick Durbin as President Obama's most important priority.

Support for the economic recovery plan working its way through Congress has fallen again this week. For the first time, a plurality of voters nationwide oppose the $800-billion-plus plan.

The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey found that 37% favor the legislation, 43% are opposed, and 20% are not sure.

Two weeks ago, 45% supported the plan. Last week, 42% supported it.

Opposition has grown from 34% two weeks ago to 39% last week and 43% today.

Sixty-four percent (64%) of Democrats still support the plan. That figure is down from 74% a week ago. Just 13% of Republicans and 27% of those not affiliated with either major party agree.

Canada a desired location for Guantanamo Bay detainees

Barry Artiste Op/Ed

This story is certainly a hotbed topic, with the majority of Canadian polls stating Canada doesn't want any detainees from Gitmo on Canadian Soil according to the CBC News Broadcast being delivered today.

Many state if they are innocent, as the US state, why isn't Obama allowing them to immigrate to the good old USA?

Many Guantanamo Bay detainees cleared of terrorist charges and slated for release have expressed a desire to live in Canada, and refugee organizations are calling for sponsors.

The Canadian Council for Refugees (CCR), a non-profit umbrella group representing several non-governmental organizations and churches, is leading the plea, which goes out to groups and private individuals alike. The ability for citizens to sponsor refugees is unique to Canada, according to CCR executive director Janet Dench, noting refugees to every other country must be government-sponsored.

Three slayings in 24 hours for Metro Vancouver
Victim in second fatal shooting rented Surrey penthouse where six were murdered in 2007

By Kim Bolan, Vancouver Sun
February 4, 2009 1:00 AM

METRO VANCOUVER — A man gunned down in the parking lot of Guildford Town Centre Tuesday was the same person who rented the Surrey penthouse where six people were brutally murdered in October 2007, The Vancouver Sun has learned.

Raphael Baldini had appeared in Vancouver Provincial Court earlier Tuesday on assault and uttering threats charges laid in October 2008.

He was also facing a series of gun charges filed against him in November 2007, just weeks after six people — including innocent bystanders Chris Mohan and Ed Schellenberg — were shot execution-style in suite 1505 of the Balmoral Tower, which Baldini had been renting.

The 21-year-old Baldini was sprayed with gunfire in the parking lot of the busy Surrey mall about 5:20 p.m. Tuesday — the second of three targeted hits in Metro Vancouver in less than 24 hours.

He was charged Tuesday with assault causing bodily harm and assault with a weapon in connection with the attack, which left a 23-year-old Ontario man with severe cuts to his left hand. The man was heading home after watching a Canucks game at a Vancouver restaurant when he refused to give the boy a cigarette and was slashed.

Tom Daschle's Letter to Committee on Tax Issues

February 1, 2009

Dear Chairman Baucus and Senator Grassley:

Thank you for the work you and the Committee are doing to move forward on my nomination by President Obama to be Secretary of Health and Human Services. I know that despite the heavy workload from both the Economic Recovery Act and SCHIP, as well as all the nominees the Committee is handling, your staff has worked diligently on my nomination. I also appreciate the strong commitment to fairness you both have expressed.

As you can well imagine, I am deeply embarrassed and disappointed by the errors that required me to amend my tax returns. I apologize for the errors and profoundly regret that you have had to devote time to them. I will be happy to answer any Committee members’ questions about these issues. In the meantime, as a follow-up to our conversations, I would like to briefly review three issues discussed at my meeting with your staff and mentioned in our meeting on Thursday.

Last fall, when I was being considered for this position, the Presidential Transition Team’s vetters reviewed my records. During the course of those reviews, the vetting team flagged charitable contributions they felt were deducted in error. When my accountant realized I would need to file amended returns, he suggested addressing another matter I had raised with him earlier in the year: whether the use of a car service offered to me by a close friend might be a tax issue. In December, my accountant advised me that it should be reported as imputed income in the amended returns.

At about the same time, the friend’s company, a consulting client, informed my accountant of a clerical error it had made on the Form 1099 it provided to me and reported to the IRS for 2007. In an effort to ensure full compliance and the most complete disclosure possible of my personal finances, we remedied these issues by filing amended tax returns with full payments, including interest. We provided all this information to the Committee in addition to the completed Committee questionnaire and my responses to your staff’s questions. I disclosed this information to the Committee voluntarily, and paid the taxes and any interest owed promptly. My mistakes were unintentional.

I am available to answer any further questions you might have and look forward to coming before the Committee in the very near future to discuss the critical health and human services issues facing our country. Should I be approved by your Committee and confirmed by the Senate, I look forward to working in partnership with you both to pass meaningful legislation that will help Americans get the health reform they need and deserve and to ensure that all HHS programs and activities reflect a commitment to responding to the needs of our citizens in a manner that is compassionate, cost-effective, and transparent.

Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,

Tom Daschle

White House: Daschle's Tax Failure Was a 'Serious Mistake'

Photos

Back tax issues doesn't seem to  bother President Obama when picking cabinet positions.  President Obama and other top Democrats are calling failure to pay taxes a serious but forgivable mistake.  When Linda Chavez was up for Labor Secretary in 2001 under President Bush, she was ousted quickly due to tax issues.  In 1993 Zoe Baird withdrew as Attorney General nominee after failing to pay taxes.  The right is wondering if this is  change Americans can be deceived in?  Paying ones taxes was toughed as being  Patriotic by the now Vice-President Biden.  Based on Bidens criteria, are Obama's nominees un-patriotic?

The White House today called Tom Daschle's failure to pay more than $100,000 in back taxes a "serious mistake," but the president still "absolutely" supports his nomination to be secretary of Health and Human Services.

ExpandIn this Dec. 11, 2008 file photo, President-elect Barack Obama, right, stands with Health and Human Services Secretary-designate, former Senate Majority Leader Thomas Daschle, during a news conference in Chicago. Daschle recently filed amended tax returns to report $128,203 in unpaid taxes and $11,964 in interest, according to a Senate document obtained by The Associated Press. The White House backing came on a day when the beleaguered nominee apologized and said he was "deeply embarrassed" over the tax flap.

In an effort to end the controversy over Daschle's nomination as HHS secretary, a key Democrat also voiced his support and Daschle agreed to be grilled about his tax issues today by the 23 members of the Senate Finance Committee.

British Columbia Shows the World we are Ready for 2010 Olympics

British Columbia, the Wild, Wild West of Canada, certainly Showcases the World with it's "The Bestest Place in the World to Live"!  Judging by the rash of gangland shootings, killings and rapes this past week and month, one wonders if the World may rethink its desire to get the bestest seat in the house, for some if they are not careful on our city streets, the best seat may be at the Coroners Table.
Yay, Vancouver politicians and lawmakers, you surely show your true colours to the world, Blood Red!

This time, the shooting took place in Surrey, at King George Highway and 100 Avenue, about 1:30 Friday afternoon. No one appears to have been hit and police aren't saying who was targeted, if in fact, they know.

Like the attempt on the life of Jamie Bacon in Abbotsford last week, this shooting took place in a busy commercial area surrounded by stores, restaurants, bus stops and a Skytrain station.

It really seems like just a matter of time before someone is going to get caught in the crossfire.

Breaking news July 8 2007 RCMP Arrest 2 men in RCMP killings

Photos

Barry Artiste Op/Ed

Justice in Canada has deemed a Human Life is now worth 1.5 years.

This is the sentence given to two complicit in the murder of 4 RCMP officers murdered in cold blood, not in a gunfight mind you, just 4 officers walking along a property investigating a Marijuana Grow Operation in a rural farm in Mayerthorpe, Alberta, while a gunman lay in wait in the field waiting to pick them off one by one.

Many wonder why Canada is called Nancy Canada when it comes to Justice, 2 men convicted were complicit in the shooting deaths of 4 RCMP officers from Mayerthorpe, Alberta who were unaware they were soon to breath their last breath as they walked around a property as they investigated a Grow op owned by James Roszko who was hiding in the distance hunting rifle at the ready to kill the 4 unsuspecting officers in cold blood in the winter of 2005. Roszko later killed himself soon after.   The Seven year prision sentence handed to each accomplice equates to about 1.5 years for each RCMP Mountie murdered, as Canada has a 2/3 sentencing in which Murderers can be released after serving 2/3 of their sentence.

This also brings to mind many in Canada who say Marijuana and Grow Op are harmless pastimes, certainly should have a lengthy discussion with the RCMPs family on the subject.

Any many wonder why Officers everywhere, sometimes lose it, when injustices like this are commonplace, when day after day they place themselves in harms way to protect an uncaring and thankless public.

Conservative Prime Minister Stephen has been tirelessly trying to end the Nancyisms in the Canadian Justice System by passing strong anti crime bills, which are stonewalled by a Liberal dominated Senate.  Certainly Canadians should ask themselves who the Liberals represent, because clearly it does not seem to be for Law Abiding Canadians.

Many in Canada say Justice is Unfair, My Opinion in this case is Justice is Non existent!

EDMONTON - Short of drawing up the plan and pulling the trigger, Shawn Hennessey couldn't have been more help to Mountie-murderer James Roszko, and for that he must serve more than 10 years in jail, a judge ruled Friday.

Justice Eric Macklin also found that while Dennis Cheeseman was a virtual tag-a-long, he knew he was placing Mounties in mortal danger and therefore must serve more than seven years behind bars.

Breaking news July 8 2007 RCMP Arrest 2 men in RCMP killings

One wonders If a Lesson can be learned in all this when Prosecutor "TimMAY"!! makes his legendary closing arguments on the fate of this Kenny Imposter and his accomplices, while Judge Butters, gives the accused a good Grounding, the Defence Lawyer Cartman demands the accused "Respect Mah Authouriton"!

Kenny's legal guardians Mr.Slave and Mr. Garrision (sans Mr. Hat) will certainly point an accusing finger at Kenny's accomplice, "Towelie" and "Sexual Harrassment Panda" as the prime suspects in the untimely Death of Mr. Hanky "The Christmas Poo"!

Jury Foreman Counsellor Mackey verdict "Don't Do Drugs, Drugs are Bad" certainly seem lost on the accused, who under Bad Drugs mistook Mr. Hanky for a large Chocolate Ice Cream  Cone when they were arrested by Officer Barbrady!

Stay tuned, as I am sure a "Lesson will be Learned" as this lengthy trial continues at World Police Headquarters!

"America Hell Yeah!"

A cartoon character was entered as Exhibit No. 9 yesterday during a second-degree murder trial because a defence lawyer wanted to illustrate how an accused was apparently wearing a coat.

Lawyer Vince Clifford filed a printout of the character Kenny from South Park after telling jurors he searched Google for the image to understand how a witness was describing Emmanuel Chretien, one of two men charged in the death of Michael Lee Hibsman.

Clifford is the lawyer for co-accused Mathieu Goyette.

Nancy Villeneuve, Chretien's former girlfriend, had told jurors that she saw Chretien near a Burger King on Montreal Rd. wearing his hood partially over his face after they went to check out police activity on Emond St. on Nov. 11, 2006. She described him as looking like Kenny.

A Diplomat Shuts His Eyes to the Israeli Gaza Solution.

Guess it is easy to see which side this Diplomats Pita is buttered on!

Dear Ms. Trine Lilleng,

You were an unknown Norwegian diplomat till this month.

No longer.

As first secretary in the Norwegian Embassy in Saudi Arabia, you recently sent out an email on your office account in which you declared: "The grandchildren of Holocaust survivors from World War II are doing to the Palestinians exactly what was done to them by Nazi Germany."

Accompanying your text were photos, with an emphasis on children, seeking to juxtapose the Holocaust with the recent Israeli military operation in Gaza.

Clearly, you are miscast in your role as a diplomat, all the more so of a nation that has sought to play a mediating role in the Arab-Israeli conflict.

In fact, you're desperately in need of some education.

Let's begin with your current posting. You've been in Riyadh since 2007.

If you're so anguished by human rights violations, perhaps you could have begun by devoting some of your attention - and email blasts - to what surrounds you.

Or were your eyes diplomatically shut?

This National Post story by Rudyard Griffiths has certainly picked at the scabs of multiculturalism and diversity with Pro and Con going back and forth in the "Must Read Comments section of this story". Certainly inflaming Readers on both sides, Who is right and who is wrong is certainly a debate which may soon come to loggerheads with Canadians as the Canadian and American economy falters in the coming years.

Like I said, it is a good story, but a far greater story is the comments from the minds of Canadians posted in this National Post story.

Certainly of interest would be comments from Now Public readers in this Op.Ed column as well.

One of the enjoyable things about writing for the National Post is the feedback you get from readers. My last column (“Change the things you can,” Jan. 14) — suggesting a temporary reduction in immigration levels to retain, during these recessionary times, skilled workers who have emigrated to Canada — was no exception.

Some readers challenged me to explain how Canada could not but welcome 250,000 or more newcomers each year given its fast ageing workforce and flaccid birth rate. Others posited that the country’s commitment to sustained high immigration is a source of national pride and a policy that sets Canada apart from its peer nations.

The war on America's Starbucks

The war on America's Starbucks

With the latte giant reeling from overexpansion and a softening U.S. economy, doughnut maker Dunkin' Donuts took aim at its upscale rival. Now McDonald's has joined the coffee fray as well. Can Starbucks pull through?

By Joseph V. Tirella

In late 2007, Dunkin' Donuts made a surprising announcement: In a taste test in 10 major U.S. cities, the chain had put its most popular brew up against Starbucks' -- and clobbered the coffee conglomerate, 58% to 42%.

Lefty Canadian Principal Bans Singing O Canada Anthem in School

Barry Artiste Op/Ed

Perhaps it is high time to enforce a few rules in Canada, especially when the individual beliefs of one are festered on young minds.  Many Canadians, including me believe teachers whose political and socialist leanings (read Left) and beliefs has no place in our schools, a course curriculum is laid out for students to follow period. The Canadian Anthem has always been a part of the school system and though may be separate from a cirrculum,  it should still be mandatory as this is Canada, and we are all Canadians.

Speaking of deviating from course curriculum, I remember in the a couple of decades ago  our professor reliving his "Hippie Days in Toronto and Vangroovy" was talking about his beliefs of a NEW LEFTY WORLD ORDER, to us students. Some "Sheep" class mates took the bait, and some like me questioned his "Eye Glazer" beliefs. Of course he was not to fond of my questioning his personal motives.  In ending, our teacher Mr. Tofu as I liked to call him, suffered the slings of arrows later from the academic community when it was revealed he married one of our classmates soon after her graduation a couple of years later. Seems he was carrying on with at her tender age of 19 versus his 42 year. Certainly raised a lot of questions about his Svengali ways and methods over his flock.  But then the media is full of stories like this.

I put it this way, teach only from the school laws and leave your political personal crap at home next to your Taliban Manual and  Mao's Red Book. Canada is Canada and our Anthem is sacred, get used to it, or leave!

Schools should have to play O Canada: N.B. education minister Last Updated: Thursday, January 29, 2009 | 7:06 PM AT Comments188Recommend78 CBC News

The New Brunswick government will be examining rules that allow schools to independently decide whether they will play the national anthem on a daily basis, says Education Minister Kelly Lamrock.

Lamrock made the announcement on Thursday after it was revealed on Wednesday that an elementary school in southern New Brunswick had stopped playing O Canada at the start of each school day about a year ago.

Belleisle Elementary School principal Erik Millet said the decision was made to accommodate some parents, who indicated they didn't want their children taking part in the daily singing of the anthem.

Court restores rule that denied passport to terrorist

Court restores rule that denied passport to terrorist

Updated Fri. Jan. 30 2009 7:47 AM ET

The Canadian Press

OTTAWA -- The government was justified in breaching a convicted terrorist's rights by denying him a passport, the Federal Court of Appeal has ruled.

The decision made public Thursday appears to bolster Passport Canada's ability to keep the valuable travel document out of the hands of people considered a national security threat.

The three-member appeal court panel unanimously decided that the decision to refuse Fateh Kamel of Montreal a passport was a justifiable violation of his constitutional rights.

The judgment sets aside an earlier court decision that effectively struck down a rule allowing the foreign affairs minister to deny or revoke a passport on national security grounds.

Alaska finds itself in a waitng game as Mount Redoubt according to the United  States Geologicla Survey.

Alaska's Redoubt Volcano, 100 miles southwest of Anchorage, is expected to erupt within days or weeks, authorities at the Alaska Volcano Observatory say.

"The level of seismic activity" has "increased markedly" in recent days at Mount Redoubt, according to the Observatory.

From the Alaska Volcano Observatory:

Summary of Current Unrest

Since last fall, the Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO) has detected increasing volcanic unrest at Redoubt Volcano. Starting on Friday, January 23, the level of seismic activity increased markedly, and on Sunday AVO raised the Aviation Color Code to ORANGE and the Volcano Alert Level to WATCH. On the basis of all available monitoring data AVO regards that an eruption similar to or smaller than the one that occurred in 1989-90 is the most probable outcome. We expect such an eruption to occur within days to weeks.

Divorce - North American Style

Barry Artiste Op/Ed

We have all read about a Montreal Woman suing her Billionaire Ex Husband for Millions, though she is relatively well off with close to a 100K a year, home and a few million to boot for her and her children.  Yet when it comes to Childless couples, many do see the big picture affecting Joe Six Pack, and Jane Punch Clock.

Here is reality in what many feel Divorce Laws should change and be fair to both parties. Certainly this guy got Blued, Screwed and Tatooed with Alimony for the rest of his life.

I put it this way, no kids, well both parties better get jobs and support themselves.  Many use imaginary illnesses to get out of working. To me that doesn't wash, when even the disabled are working and wish to be treated no different than able bodied people, but on the other side of the coin, it is certainly convienient when they wish to monopolize on the fact they are disabled in order to get Cash for Life in the Divorce Lottery.

What ever happened to equality between the sexes?  Or is that a convienent ploy that always works for a lawyer and plaintiffs advantage?

What do Now Public Readers think?

Am I out to Lunch in what seems like a Lottery Cash Grab for Life in the Childless Couple Divorce Lottery?

You tell me!

Wayne Tippett has just two things of any real value left in his life: a 10-year-old car and a granite tombstone.

At 51, Tippett is broken, bankrupt and bunking in the guest room of his parents' Burlington home after a divorce settlement that's left him $75,000 in debt and racking up $1,000 more each month.

Today, he'll appear in court at a default hearing to try to explain why he can't afford to pay his ex-wife (the couple had no children) $3,300 a month, $16,000 in retroactive alimony and $42,000 of her court costs out of a complex case he himself still doesn't understand.

Susan Collins can’t vote for a Tax Cheat for Treasury Secretary

Susan Collins: I can’t vote for a tax cheat for Treasury secretary posted at 5:15 pm on January 26, 2009 by Allahpundit
Send to a Friend | Share on Facebook | printer-friendly

Co-starring Andrea Mitchell, playing devil’s advocate for Obama the way any objective journalist would. The floor vote’s scheduled for 6 p.m. ET; Geithner will, of course, sail through, but watching one of the Senate’s foremost RINOs make the case against him here leaves me intrigued about the final tally. I’m betting 70/30, with Orrin Hatch’s case of Geithner fever infecting roughly 10 Republicans. Anyone want to take the under?

In fairness, he partly redeemed himself with this:

Hatch closed by saying that there is a double standard for nominations, and Geithner is benefiting from it. If a Republican nominee had Geithner’s tax record, Hatch said, he or she would have been attacked by Democrats and the media, and “the president would have had no choice other than to withdraw the nomination.” “A Republican nominee in Mr. Geithner’s position would not have even gotten a committee vote,” Hatch said.

The boss thinks this should be an obvious party-line no vote, and after some rumination, I agree. We have to pick our spots in opposing The One at this point, partly because he’s so popular at the moment and partly because we don’t want the force of a no vote diminished by opposing everything and coming off as mindless obstructionists. But Obama’s other appointees have all been rubber-stamped; only Holder will catch static, and with good reason. If you can’t draw the line on a tax cheat at Treasury, where can you draw it? Thumbs down.

Obama begins reversing Bush Climate policies

Photos

No footage found.

President Obama's Administartion began taking action againt the Science Blind Republican George Bush according to Obama staffers.  A recent poll found that Climate change policy is on 41% of the American People change agenda.

U.S. President Barack Obama began reversing the climate policies of the Bush administration on Monday, clearing the way for new rules to force auto makers to produce more fuel-efficient and less polluting cars. The president told the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to reconsider immediately a request by California to impose its own strict limits on vehicle carbon dioxide emissions, blamed for contributing to global warming. Obama, a Democrat, took over from former President George W. Bush last Tuesday. Bush's Republican administration had denied the request, prompting California and other states to sue. "The federal government must work with, not against, states to reduce greenhouse gas emissions," Obama said at the White House, taking a stab at his predecessor's policies. "The days of Washington dragging its heels are over. My administration will not deny facts, we will be guided by them. We cannot afford to pass the buck ... onto the states."

Инаугурационная речь: Inaugural speech

After Abraham Lincoln spoke at Gettysburg -- now considered to be one of the finest orations in U.S. history -- the critics gave him mixed reviews. One critic called his words "silly, flat and dishwatery utterances," while another called it "a perfect gem, deep in feeling, compact in thought and expression." So far, President Barack Obama's speech has gotten the same treatment, with one writer referring to his "soaring rhetoric"; others calling it "flat rhetoric." I guess we'll have to wait until all the scores are in.

3,000 would-be immigrants used fake Que. health cards: report

Barry Artiste Op/Ed

And one wonders why Americans accuse Canada as a "Porous Sieve" for Illegals walking into our Country with many keeping an illegal eye in getting in the Good Ole USA. What will happen to these so called Immigration Consultants?  Most likely a fine, if there is any money to be had, as for jail time, well very few ever see jail time of any length of time, hence not a great deterrent in order to open up for business the next day and do it all over again.

As for the 3,000 illegals who broke the law, what will happen to them, perhaps a background check to weed out any who have a lengthy criminal record in their home countries in Africa, though in many third world countries Record keeping in any form is pretty much sketchy.

Chances are each and everyone of these Illegals will have plenty O stories of harsh treatment in their former homeland if they return. So they may be allowed to remain in Canada. Why? Because first Canada would have to determine their birth country in order to deport them, and of course a mysterious game of cat and mouse will ensue when trying to get any information of personal documentation of their country of origin, as with most, they (Illegals convieniently destroy such documentation).

In ending, one can be sure there will be line ups of  Vote Grubbing Politicians and the resulting grandstanding on both the Pro and Con side.

 url="http://www.edmontonjournal.com/would+immigrants+used+fake+health+cards+report/1215525/story.html"]

MONTREAL — Quebec’s health-care insurance board and the RCMP have uncovered a ring of about 3,000 north Africans allegedly using fake medicare cards to help themselves immigrate to Canada, according to a report in La Presse published Saturday.

In a statement, the Regie de l’assurance maladie du Quebec confirmed it is investigating “a sophisticated subterfuge that apparently was set up by an immigration consultant to make believe his clients live in Quebec.” It did not say how many people might be involved, however.

Two Rock Hill men ask for and receive forgiveness for their ra...

ROCK HILL — Next to a lunch counter that was segregated for so long sat a table of two white people and five black people Friday afternoon. Conversation quickly took them back to Jan. 31, 1961.

Elwin Wilson, one of those white men, had come that day to that very lunch counter four steps away from where he was now, wanting to pull one of those black men off the stool. He wanted to give a beating.

The other white man, Steve Coleman, had been just outside, among so many, wanting to scream racial epithets.

Steve Coleman, left, hugs Phyllis Hyatt, one of the "City Girls" from the civil rights demostrations in downtown in the sixties, after meeting at the Old Town Bistro in Rock Hill Friday.

But 48 years on, Wilson, now 72, and Coleman, in his mid-60s, wanted something entirely different from these five black people.

They wanted forgiveness.

Study: Major California Earthquake Over Due

Photos

No footage found.

A new study sugusts that Californias San Andres Fault is more likely for a massive earthquake then previously thought.  Massive earthquakes were thought to occur once every 200 years but recent studies show that the number is closer to 137 years.  Since the last major earthquake occurred in 1857 at approximatly 7.9.  If the study were liniar it would mean that an massive earthquake was due in 1994.  Since these studies are non-linur and earthquakes do not occur exactly every 137 years, the study just shows that a massive earthquake is over due.

Large earthquakes have rumbled along the southern section of the San Andreas fault more frequently than previously believed, suggesting that Southern California could be overdue for a strong temblor on the notorious fault line, according to a new study.

The Carrizo Plain section of the San Andreas has not seen a massive quake since the much-researched Ft. Tejon temblor of 1857, thought to have been about magnitude 7.9, which is considered the most powerful earthquake to hit Southern California in modern times.

But the new research by UC Irvine scientists, to be published next week, found major quakes occurred there roughly every 137 years over the last 700 years. Until now, scientists have believed big quakes have occurred along the fault roughly every 200 years. The findings are significant because seismologists have long believed this portion of the fault is capable of sparking the so-called “Big One” that officials have for decades warned will eventually occur in Southern California.

“That means it’s been long enough since 1857 that we should be concerned about another great earthquake that ruptures through this part of the fault,” said Ken Hudnut, a geophysicist at the U.S. Geological Survey in Pasadena, who was not involved in the study.

WASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama's nominee as director of national intelligence declined to say Thursday whether waterboarding is torture, marking a fissure with attorney general nominee Eric Holder, who said that it is.

"I'm hesitating to set a standard here which will put in jeopardy some of the dedicated intelligence officers who checked to see that what they were doing was legal and then did what they were told to do," said Dennis C. Blair, nominated for the intelligence post, at his Senate confirmation hearing. He did declare, however, that "there will be no waterboarding on my watch. There will be no torture on my watch."

Sen. Carl Levin, chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee and a member of the intelligence panel that held the hearing, said Mr. Blair's answer was "troubling" in comparison to Mr. Holder's clear statement last week.

Overall, senators expressed support for Mr. Blair, a retired admiral who spent 34 years in the Navy, and he is expected to be confirmed.

Whistler Olympic Medal Ceromonies killed by budget cuts

Barry Artiste Op/Ed
It looks like Whistler may be out of the loop when it comes to the Olympic Medal Ceremonies, because of budget cuts.

Olympic Officials remain tightlipped where alternative venues would be to hold the Olympic medal ceremonies.
Of course on idea to appease both the anti poverty activists and the well heeled would be to showcase the Olympic Medal Ceremonies in Good Old Downtown Eastside. That way the homeless and the poor would at least get a front seat to watch the ceremonies as they stand shoulder to shoulder with Political Wonks and the Rich Celeb types. After all many politicians and rich Celeb types express deep concern about helping the residents of the DTES, so perhaps this is where proof is in the pudding and be nice to see if they are willing to mingle with the downtrodden, Proof that the Well Heeled will put their Mouth where their Money and Intentions Lie.

Medal presentation ceremonies planned for the $13.6-million Olympic celebration plaza in Whistler will likely be cancelled due to budget pressures, Vancouver Organizing Committee CEO John Furlong said Wednesday.

That means Whistler residents and Winter Games spectators won't be able to catch as much of the Olympic spirit as planned at the plaza, which was especially built for that purpose.

Faced with a much more dire financial picture than expected, the committee has "rearranged" its $1.63-billion operating budget to remove items that are not central to its mandate of providing services to athletes, Furlong told reporters.

WASHINGTON - A female Chinese graduate student was decapitated by a fellow student in a campus cafe at Virginia Tech, the scene of the worst school shooting in US history in 2007, police said Thursday.

At approximately 7:00 pm Wednesday, Xin Yang, a 22-year-old graduate student from Beijing, was killed at an Au Bon Pain cafe on the Virginia Tech campus in Blacksburg, Virginia, university officials said.

They added that emergency contact records suggest that Yang and the student who murdered her, Haiyang Zhu from Ningbo, China, knew each other. According to officials, witnesses said Zhu, 25, attacked Yang with a knife.

Welcome to Vancouver, British Columbia

Barry Artiste Op/Ed

Here is something, we in Vancouver have been living through 24 hours a day, nearing a whole week.

Many cannot believe it when we say when in our cars we cannot see two cars in front of us for an entire 24 hours a day. Last night it took me 2 hours to travel from Point Roberts USA to Burnaby.   The scenery was a dim eerie yellow glow of headlights for miles from the Alex Fraser Bridge.

This photo was taken today at 8:40 am from nearby Cypress mountain, the towers you see are poking through fog, not clouds.

Photo send to me by a friend whose coworker took the photo and wanted to see it published.

The photo is quite beautiful, once I find her name I will post it, Kudos to the Photographer.

And England and San Francisco thinks they have foggy days/ try it for 24 hours a day 7 days a week.

Video: No stimulus money for white males

Video: No stimulus money for white males posted at 8:58 am on January 22, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Wasn’t this supposed the era of post-racialism? Robert Reich apparently didn’t get that message. In his appearance before Congress on structuring the stimulus plan on January 7th, Reich suggested that the package discriminate against white male workers:

I am concerned, as I’m sure many of you are, that these jobs not simply go to high-skilled people who are already professionals or to white male construction workers.  … I have nothing against white male construction workers.  I’m just saying that there are a lot of other people who have needs as well. … Criteria can be set so that the money does go to others, the long term unemployed minorities, women, people who are not necessarily construction workers or high-skilled professionals.

Basically, Reich wants Congress to create some means testing that doesn’t explicitly keep stimulus funds from paying the salaries of white males.  He suggests that the lawmakers create “criteria” that will have that effect in practice without being crass enough to say, No Whites Need Apply.  Congress has done this in milder form for the last few decades by mandating set-asides for women- and minority-owned businesses in government contracts, but even those don’t require the businesses to refuse to hire white male construction workers.

It's the Plains of Abraham, Round 2, as PQ and Ottawa square off

Barry Artiste Op/Ed

How long does it take for old wounds to heal? Apparently, when the injury came at the hands of the British on the Plains of Abraham, 250 years is not long enough.

Agnès Maltais, Parti Québécois MNA for the Quebec City riding of Taschereau, shares with Le Soleil her outrage that federal Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs Josée Verner plans to attend a re-enactment this summer of the battle of the Plains of Abraham. The skirmish will mark the 250th anniversary of the battle, in which the British under General Wolfe defeated General Montcalm's French forces, bringing an end to French rule over what is now Quebec.

CANADA Left Wing Invite 4 EX Prime Minister to Speak Environment

Canada has six living former prime ministers. So when four of them get together to urge the current federal government to incorporate a “green stimulus” package into the upcoming budget, the joint effort sounds pretty impressive … until you realize that among the four of them — Joe Clark, John Turner, Kim Campbell and Paul Martin — they spent just 42 months in office.

That’s a total of three-and-a-half years, less the a full term for a typical majority government. Only two of them — Messrs. Clark and Martin — were ever elected to the job. And only one — Mr. Martin — spent as much as a year (actually, 26 months) as PM. If these folks have any special expertise in the field of environmentalism, they hid it well during their tenures.

U.S. citizen wins Lotto 6/49

For one American citizen and his family, Canada is the country that keeps on giving.

For the US Government, a 2 million dollar tax windfall from one of it's citizens is pretty much good fortune for its depleted tax coffers.

It was evident Sean Mayer was trying to figure out ways to beat the tax man even while the 51-year-old Seattle-area businessman was collecting a $7.5 million cheque for winning the Jan. 3 Lotto 6/49 draw.

But, because Mayer's American, he's going to have to cough up $2.1 million of that prize money to the U.S. government.
